DRESSING
It is a piece of sterile cloth that covers a wou
nd to prevent infection and or to stop bleeding.
PURPOSE OF DRESSING

TECHNIQUES IN APPLYING A DRESSING
 Wash hands and wear gloves if possible
 unwrap the dressing as close to the wound as posibl
e.
 Skin is not sterile. If the dressing slips over the victi
ms' skin while you are trying to position it, discard a
nd use a freash one.
 place the dressing over the wound
 Use a dressing that is large enough to extend at leas
t 1 inch beyond the edges of the wound.
 if body tissue or organs are exposed, cover the wou
nd with a dressing that will stick.
KINDS OF OPEN WOUND
1. PUNCTURE
- Ia a piercing wound caused by n
ails, needles and other pointed obj
ects.
2. ABRAISION
 Iscaused by rubbing or scraping
the skin against a rough surface.
3. INCISION
 Isa cut caused by knife, broken
glass or any sharp object.
4. LACERATION
 Isa blunt breaking or tearing of
soft tissues usually resulting fr
om mishandling tools and other ac
cidents.
5. AVULSION
 Isa forcible tearing or partial
tearing away of tissues.
FIRST AID FOR OPEN WOUND WITH SEVERE BL
EEDING
 Wear gloves and remove or cut clothing as nec
essary to expose wound.
 Control bleeding by applying direct pressure.
 Elevate the injured part above the heart exce
pt for eye injury and wounds with embedded ob
ject.
 Cover wund with sterile dressing and bandage.
 Care for shock
 Consult a physician immediately.
BANDAGES
 Should be clean but need not be s
terile
 Can be used to :
- apply pressure to bleeding
- for covering wounds and burns
- providing support for immobiliz
ation for broken bones , sprains
and strains
TYPES OF BANDAGES
1. TRIANGULAR BANDAGE
- Is made from cloth and can be us
ed as cold compress, padding for su
pport, or support sling.
2. ACE BANDAGE
Secures dressings in plac

3. TUBULAR BANDAGE
Is used to support joints
or hold dressings in plac
e.
4. SMALLER TUBULAR BANDAGE

 Used for finger injuries.


TWO PHASES OF BANDAGING
1. An open phase bandage
- used for wounds on top and back of the h
ead, chest, back, hand, and foot, and arm sli
ng.

2. A cravat phase bandage


- used for wounds that need extra support
like wound on the eye, forehead, ear, cheeck,
jaw, shoulder, hip, arm, leg, elbow, knee, an
d palm and sprained ankle.
TECHNIQUES IN BANDAGING
1. bandaging techniques depends upon the size and
location of the wound, your first aid skills and
materials at hand,
2. bandage firmly over bleeding and securely over
the broken bone,not so tight so as not to cut of
blood circulation.
3. since most injuries swell, check regularly to
ensure that the bandage is still comfortable and
that it remains firmly secured.
4. Secure the bandage with a tape, clips or a bow
or square knot. Ensure that the bandagees, especi
