CHAPTER 21 EXILE IN DAPITAN
Lemery Colleges- COLLEGE DEPARTMENT EXILE IN DAPITAN • On June 26, 1892, Rizal arrived in Manila . • July 3, 1892, he founded the Liga Filipina • ·July 7, he was arrested and deported to Dapitan, without benefit of trial. • For 4 years, he lived in that outpost of Spanish power in Mindanao • · During this interlude in his life, he practiced medicine, conducted scientific researches, established a school, built the town waterworks, beautified the local plaza, carried out literary and artistic pursuits, engaged in farming, became a successful businessman, and increase his knowledge in languages. ARRIVAL IN MANILA • Rizal and his sister Lucia arrived in Manila at noon of Sunday, June 26, 1892, on board the small steamer Don Juan. • They were met by a platoon of carabineers and their commander. • While the carabineers were inspecting their luggage, a captain and sergeant of the Guardia Civil Veterana (Manila Police) , both in disguise, watched the inspection proceedings. • After the customs inspection, Rizal and his sister were allowed to go. ARRIVAL IN MANILA • The two Rizals registered at Oriente Hotel in Binondo, which was then the best hotel in Manila. • That Afternoon, at 4:00 pm, Dr. Rizal went to Malacanan to pay a courtesy call on Governor Despujol, but he was told to come back in the evening. At 7PM, he returned to Malacanan and was able to have an interview with the governor general. Who granted the liberty of his father but not of his brother and brothers-in-law. He was told to come later for another conference. From Malacanan, he visited his siters– Narcisa and Saturnina. ARRIVAL IN MANILA

His presence in Manila caused a sensation among the Filipinos who were all eager to see him and talk with him. On the other hand, the Spaniards were worried, fearful of his great popularity. • On the night of July 3, 1892, a week after his arrival from Hong Kong, Rizal founded the Liga Filipina in the home of Doroteo Ongjunco, Ilaya Street, Tondo, Manila. • The new officers were elected of this new civic association:
