DATA COLLECTION

PROCEDURE: C

INTERVIEW
Prepared By: RICA ELOISA C. LOPEZ
INTERVIEW
• is a data gathering technique that makes you
verbally ask the subjects or respondents
questions to give answers to what your
research study is trying to look for.
INTERVIEW
“it is a conversation with a purpose” that gives
direction to the question-answer activity
between the interviewer and the interviewee
TYPES OF INTERVIEW
1. Structured Interview
This is an interview that requires an
interview schedule or a list of questions
answerable with one and only item from a set of
alternative responses.
TYPES OF INTERVIEW
2. Unstructured Interview
In this type of interview, the respondents
answer the questions based on what they
personally think and feel about it. There are no
suggested answers.
TYPES OF INTERVIEW
3. Semi-structured Interview
This type of interview is a flexible and
organized type.
APPROACHES IN INTERVIEW
1. Individual interview- only one respondent is
interviewed
2. Group interview- group of people are interviewed
at the same time.
3. Mediated Interview- non face-to-face interview
since it takes place through electronic
communication devices like email, telephone and
etc.
STEPS IN CONDUCTING AN
INTERVIEW
1st: Getting to know each other
2nd: Having an idea of the research
3rd: Starting the interview
4th: Conducting the interview proper
5th: Putting an End to the Interview
6th: Pondering Over Interview Afterthoughts
QUESTIONNAIRE
A questionnaire is a paper containing a list of
questions including the specific place and space
in the paper where you write the answers to the
questions.
PURPOSES OF A QUESTIONNAIRE
1. To discover people’s thoughts and feelings
about the topic of the research
2. To assist you in conducting an effective
face-to-face interview with your respondents
3. To help you to plan how to obtain and record
the answers to your questions
4. To make the analysis, recording, and coding
of data easier and faster.
TYPES OF QUESTIONNAIRE
1. Postal Questionnaire- the questionnaire goes
through postal service or electronic mail (e-
mail)
2. Self-administered Questionnaire- the
researcher asks the questions, then he will
be writing the interviewee’s answer on a
paper
ADVANTAGES OF QUESTIONNAIRE
1. It is cheap
2. It entails an easy distribution to the respondents
3. It offers more opportunity for the respondents to
think about their answers
4. It enables easy comparison of answers
5. It has the capacity to elicit spontaneous or
genuine answers
DISADVANTAGES OF
QUESTIONNAIRE
1. The distributed questionnaires may not be
retrieved for analysis
2. Confusing and uninteresting questions in to
respondents may fail to elicit desired the result
3. It prevents you to interact with respondents.
Suggested Data Collection Procedure for
Different Types of Qualitative Research Design
• Case Study- interview, observation, and
questionnaire
• Ethnography- interview, observation, field notes
• Phenomenology-unstructured interview
• Historical Study- interview, observation,
biography or autobiography reading, documentary
analysis and chronicling activities
• Grounded Theory- semi-structure interview,
analysis of written works, notes, phone calls,
meeting, and training sessions
Activity
Create an interview protocol the same with the
example. Note that, you are conducting a
research about Grade 11 students experiences in
Statistics and Probability class.
Assessment:
Simulate a 2-minute interview based on the topic
from the Activity. Use the interview guide.
