EDUCATION
Majority of people used
drugs. People are aware of
the continuous discovery of
drugs for different ailments.
They also know how and
where these drugs are
obtained.
DRUGS
Term drugs comes from the dutch word
droog, which means dry.
in the field of medicine, drug is any
chemical substance intended for use in
diagnosis, cure, treatment and
prevention of diseases in a person or
animal.
It has varied effects which could use
physical, emotional and mental changes.
Differentsources of drugs comes from
plants, animals, minerals and from
chemicals prepared in the laboratory.

Drugs could be swallowed, applied or


injected into body.

Varied forms- capsules, tablet pill,


liquid and powder.
Classification of Drugs
according to Use and
Effect
When use properly a drug could be a
great help for health.

Analgesic- drug used to relieve pain. Such


drugs could be narcotic or non- narcotic.

Narcotics- include morphine, codeine or


heroin.
these drugs comes from opium, which
are dangerous to use. These should be
prescribed by doctor.
Non- Narcotics- like aspirin,
acetaminophen or paracetamol
are safe to use for pain or
fever.
Three General Categories of
Drugs
(based to their use and
effects)
Stimulants
Are drugs that temporarily cause
wakefulness.
Provides the users mental
alertness, overexcitedness and
talkativeness.
Also called uppers.
Also provide physical strength
and improve mental skills.
Depressants
Also called downers, sedative and
tranquilizers.
Slow down mental processes.
Opposite to stimulants.
Examples are barbiturates and sedatives
which prescribes to people with
insomnia, epilepsy and nervous
breakdown.
To induce sleep and allow the nerves t
relax.
Hallucinogens or Psychedelics
Affect sensation, thinking and
emotions.
Produce illusions and hallucinations,
provoke the imagination and disturb a
person’s thinking.
Examples- marijuana, lysergic acid
diethylamide (LSD) and mescaline.
These drugs are little help in the field
of medicine.

A. Dangerous drugs Act of 1972
1. Prohibited Drugs
2. Regulated Drugs
B. Over the counter drugs (OTC)
-could be bought at drugstores
without doctors prescription.
-the used of non prescription drugs
is dangerous, for it could lead to drug
abuse.
Doctor’s Prescription
Shown to a pharmacist who
prepares and gives the drug.
Together with the dosage, time,
and direction for use is called
prescribe drugs.
Only licensed could prescribe a
drug and only licensed
pharmacist could sell it.
Correct use of DRUGS
TAKE ONLY DRUGS PRESCRIBED BY
DOCTORS.
DO NOT USE OTC DRUGS
AVOID USING DRUGS WHICH
RECOMMENDED BY PEOPLE OTHER
THAN DOCTORS.
THROW AWAY LEFT OVERS DRUGS
AND THOSE NOT USED FOR A LONG
TIME.
KNOW THE NAME OF THE DRUGS
YOU ARE USING.
DRUG ABUSE
Intake of drugs, prohibited or not,
beyond normal doses which may have
bad effects in the person’s body, thinking,
feeling and behavior.
Use of drugs without doctors
prescription.
Use of more doses than what the doctor
prescribed.
Not taking drugs on time.
Incorrect used of drugs.
Prevention of DRUG ABUSE
- It needs the cooperative
effort of the youth, parents,
teachers, and leaders of the
community.
What the Youth can do?
Used drugs properly according to doctors
prescription.
Learn to accept things and have self
respect (including weaknesses)
Engage in desirable, meaningful and
enjoyable activities.
Share problem to someone can be
trusted.
Learn to face the problems and other
concerns without using drugs.
In case there are problems
cannot be solved, do not
hesitate to ask help from
parents, teachers, leaders of
faith, doctors, and or guidance
counselors.
