EYEBALL

5 Lecture 1 – Sub Topic Name

FEATURES OF THE EYEBALL

1. Eyeball is a cystic structure kept distended by the pressure inside it.

2. Oblate spheroid in shape.
3. The central point on the maximum convexities of the anterior and posterior
curvatures is called the anterior and posterior pole.
4.The equator of the eyeball lies at the mid plane between the two poles.

6 Lecture 1 – Sub Topic Name

DIMENSIONS

1. Antero posterior diameter 24mm

2. Horizontal diameter 23.5mm
3. Vertical diameter 23 mm
4. Circumference 75mm
5. Volume 6.5ml
6. Weight 7 gm

7 Lecture 1 – Sub Topic Name

COATS OF THE EYEBALL

1. FIBROUS COAT
It is a dense, strong wall which protects the intra ocular contents.
1) Cornea :- Anterior 1/6th of the fibrous coat.
Transparent.
2) Sclera :- Posterior 5/6th opaque part

8
COATS OF THE EYEBALL

MIDDLE VASCULAR COAT ;

1.It contains uveal tract , which from anterior to posterior contains iris, ciliary body
and choroid.

INNER NERVOUS COAT ;

It contains retina.

9
SEGMENTS

1. ANTERIOR SEGMENT
Crystalline lens and the structures anterior to it.

i.e. iris, cornea , anterior chamber and posterior chamber.

10
CHAMBERS

Anterior chamber
Bounded anteriorly by the back of cornea and posteriorly by the iris.
2.5 mm deep
Slightly shallower in hypermetropes and deeper in myopes.
Contains about 0.25 ml of aqueous humour.

11
CHAMBERS

Posterior chamber
Triangular space containing about 0.06 ml of aqueous humour.

Bounded anteriorly by the posterior surface of iris and posteriorly by the crystalline
lens.

12 Lecture 1 – Sub Topic Name

SEGMENTS

2. POSTERIOR SEGMENT
It Includes the structures posterior to the lens.

i.e. vitreous humour, retina, choroid and optic disc.
