What is multi
generational
living?
 Multi generational living is when two or
three generations come together and live
under the same or in the same property
 It consists of grandparents, parents, and
children living under one

 Typically, when people grow up, they move out and get their own place. In this kind of
household, the child (who is now an adult) does not move out of the house but opted to
stay and live with the parents. Or they could have moved out of the house, but came
back and started sharing one roof with the parents.
 Multiple generations once lived together to save money, help grandparents age safely,
and curtail loneliness.
Why many people
choose to live in three
generations house ?
There are two reasons why people have
been experiencing an increase in
multigenerational living , and they
generally fall into two categories:
economic factors and demographic
factors
 Economic factors
 The economic downturn
 High unemployment rates
 Part-time work low-paid jobs
 Housing market crisis

It has forced young adults to move back with their parents and were
main reasons for the recent increase in the number of
multigenerational households
 Demographic factors
 Young adults are getting married later
 Having children later
 Housing costs continue to rise
 More people in their 20s and even 30s are
living with their parents in order to save
money
 Immigration is another big driver of the
increase in multigenerational households that
they tend to be more likely to live in a
multigenerational household.
In 2016, there are strong indications
that US and Canadian
multigenerational living is on the rise.
Approximately 64 million Americans,
or 20 percent of the population, live in
a house with at least two adult
generations, or a grandparent and at
least one other generation, under one
roof.
