TOPICAL ANTI INFECTIVES
ANTI BACTERIAL AGENTS

1. BACITRACIN
> It is an antibiotic applied topically for the treatment and
prevention of local skin infections.
> It inhibits cell wall synthesis ,which leads to cell death.
2. Neomycin and Polymyxin B
> Used as a topical antiseptics for minor skin wounds.
ACNE AGENTS

1. BENZOYL PEROXIDE ( Benzac, Desquam-X, Panoxyl)


> It acts as an antibacterial, antiseptic, drying, and keratolytic actions.
2. ERYTHROMYCIN
> It is an antibiotic with bacteriostatic effect used for the treatment of acne vulgaris.
3. ISOTRETINOIN (ACCUTANE)
> It is an oral and topical product indicated for the treatment of severe cystic acne.
> It is a proven HUMAN TERATOGEN.
> Contraindicated for pregnant women.
4. TRETINOIN (retinoic acid, vitamin A acid, renova, retin-A)
> It is used to treat acne and ameliorate the dermatologic changes
associated with sun damage.
> Its main side effects are local inflammatory reactions.
ANTIFUNGAL AGENTS

1. CLOTRIMAZOLE ( Mycelex troche, Lotrimin, Mycelex-G)


> It is available as a lozenge for the treatment of oropharyngeal
candidiasis.
> It is also available as a cream, lotion and solution for the treatment of
dermatophyses (e.g. athlete’s foot)
> Intravaginal administration in the treatment of candidiasis.

2. MICONAZOLE (Monistat, Micotin, Monistat 7)


> It is used for the treatment of athlete’s foot, jock itch,
ringworm and yeast infections.
ANTIVIRAL AGENTS

ACYCLOVIR and PENCICLOVIR


Ø It is used for the treatment of initial and recurrent herpes simplex infections in
immunocompromised patients.
TOPICAL ANESTHETIC
Ø It is a drug used to numb the skin before a painful injection.
ANTI PRUPRITIC
Ø It is an agent that contain antihistamines and corticosteroid.
Ø It is a combined anesthetic and anti pruritic in action.

ANTI INFLAMMATORY AGENTS


Ø It is an agent indicate for the relief of inflammatory
and pruritic dermatoses.

> It refers to the drugs that kills insects that live on the
outer surface.

NURSING CONSIDERATIONS
 

1. Instruct the patients to maintain adequate general hygiene and diet


during the therapy.
2. Advised the patient to avoid exposure to sunlight, unless it is
indicated.
3. Advised the patient to apply medication only as ordered and to follow
instructions carefully.
4. Instruct the patient to notify the physician of any adverse reactions.
5. All female patients of child bearing age be counseled regarding the
birth defects of any agents. All sexually active women must use
contraception during treatment and for at least 1 month afterward.
