• INTRODUCTION
• DEFINITION
• CLASSIFICATION OF DAMS
• USES OF DAMS
INTRODUCTION
• A dam is a barrier that stops or restricts the
flow of water or underground streams.
• Reservoirs created by dams not only suppress
floods
• Also provide water for activities such as
irrigation, human consumption, industrial use,
aquaculture, and navigability.
DEFINITION
• A barrier constructed to hold back water and
raise its level, forming a reservoir used to
generate electricity or as a water supply is
called as dams.

CLASSIFICATION OF DAMS
• Classification based on function
Coffer dam
Diversion dams
Debris dams
Storage dam

Type of dam based on function

• Classification based on hydraulic design
Overflow dams
Non overflow dams
Partially overflow dams

Type of dam based on hydraulic design

• Classification based on structural behaviour
Gravity dams
Arc dams
Buttress dams
Embankment dams

Type of dam based on structural behaviour

• Classification based on materials of
construction
 Rigid
 Non Rigid

Type of dam based on materials of consruction

USES OF DAMS
• Dams are important because they
provide water for domestic, industry and
irrigation purposes.
• Dams often also provide hydroelectric power
production and river navigation.
• Domestic use includes everyday activities such
as water for drinking, cooking, bathing,
washing, and lawn and garden watering.
