• Dams
• Different types of dams
• Dams in India
• Distribution of Dams in India
• A brief about the important dams in India
DAMS
• Dam is a solid barrier constructed at a suitable
location across a river to store flowing water.
• Some of the benefits of dams include:
 Hydropower Generation
 Irrigation

 Water supply for domestic and Industrial Purposes

 Drought and Flood Control
 Navigational Activities
 Good Habitat for aquatic animals Figure 1 Dam

DIFFERENT TYPES OF DAMS
• Gravity Dam
• Buttress Dam
• Embankment Dam
• Arch Dam
GRAVITY DAM
• Dams constructed from concrete or masonry are
called gravity dams.
• They are designed to hold back water by using only
the weight of the material and its resistance against
the foundation to oppose the horizontal pressure of
water pushing against it.
• Designed in such a way that each section of the dam
is stable and independent on other section.
• Bhakra Nangal Dam in India is the highest Concrete
Gravity Dam in India and second highest in the world
EMBANKMENT DAM
• It is typically created by the placement and
compaction of a complex semi plastic mound of
various compositions of soil, sand, clay or rock.
• It has semi pervious waterproof natural covering for
its surface and a dense impervious core.
• Earth fill dams are made up of mostly from
compacted earth
• Rockfill dams are made up mainly from dumped
and compacted rockfill
BUTTRESS DAM
• Buttress dams are made from concrete or masonry.
• They have a watertight upstream side supported by
triangular shaped walls, called buttresses.
• The buttresses are spaced at intervals on the downstream
side.
• They resist the force of the reservoir water trying to push the
dam over.
• Developed from gravity dam, except that it uses a lot less
material due to clear spaces between the buttresses.
• Suitable for both narrow and wide valleys and must be
constructed on sound rock.
ARCH DAM
• They are made from Concrete
• They are curved in the shape of an arch, with the top of
the arch pointing back into the water.
• An arch is a strong shape for resisting the pushing force
of the water behind the dam.
• They are usually constructed in a narrow/ steep sided
valleys
• They need good rock for foundations and for the sides
of the valleys, to resist the forces on the dam.
DAMS IN INDIA
• India has nearly 4710 completed large dams
• Most of the dams are maintained by state governments and while there are other organisations
namely Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), Damodar Valley Corporation ( DVC),
National Hydro Electric Power Corporation (NHPC)
• India ranks third in the world after China, USA and Russia in terms of number of dams
• Highest Dam in India is Tehri Dam
• Longest Dam in India is Hirakud Dam
• Oldest Dam in India is Kallanai Dam (Tamil Nadu)
