What is Output?
• What is output?
 Data that has been processed into a useful form
 Output device is any hardware component that can convey
information to one or more people

CT002-4-0 Computing and IT Computer Historical Perspective & Future Trends

Display Devices
• What is a display device?
 Output device that visually conveys text, graphics,
and video information
 Information on display device sometimes
called soft copy
 Consist of screen and the components that
produce the information on the screen
 Monitor houses display device that is packaged as
separate peripheral

CT002-4-0 Computing and IT Computer Historical Perspective & Future Trends

Display Devices
• What is an LCD monitor?
monitor
 Uses liquid crystal display
 Have a small footprint, less space
 Variety of sizes
 Mobile devices that contain LCD displays
include
 Notebook computer, Tablet PC, ultra
personal computer, portable media
player, smart phone, and PDA
 multiple LCD monitors : to run multiple
applications simultaneously

CT002-4-0 Computing and IT Computer Historical Perspective & Future Trends

Flat-Panel Displays
•What is a plasma monitor? What is digital television
(DTV) and high-definition
television (HDTV)?
 Displays image by
 Uses digital signals to produce
applying voltage to
crisper, higher-quality output on LCD
layer of gas
and plasma televisions
 Larger screen size  High resolution
and richer colors  All broadcast stations transmit digital
than LCD, but are signals
more expensive  Many programs can be broadcast on
a single digital channel
 HDTV (high-definition television)
is the most advanced form of digital
TV
 Great for game playing, watching
movies, and browsing the Internet
CT002-4-0 Computing and IT Computer Historical Perspective & Future Trends
CRT Monitors
• What is a CRT monitor?
 Contains cathode-ray tube (CRT)
 Screen coated with tiny dots of
phosphor material
 Each dot consists of a red, blue,
and green phosphor
 Common sizes are 15, 17, 19, 21,
and 22 inches
 Viewable size is diagonal
measurement of actual viewing
area

CRT Monitors
• What determines the quality of a CRT monitor?

 Screen resolution
 Text created with a smaller dot pitch is easier to read
 Refresh rate is speed at which monitor redraws
images on screen

Compare to LCD, CRT :

Larger footprints, more desk space
 Less cost
Generates more heat and use more power
Produce a small amount of electromagnetic radiation
(EMR), can pose a health risk.

Displays
• What is resolution?
 Number of horizontal
and vertical pixels in a What is dot pitch ?
display device
 Measure of the distance
 Sharpness and clarity between pixels
of image
 Sometimes called pixel
 Higher resolution makes pitch
image sharper, displays  Smaller the distance
more text on screen,
between the pixels, the
makes some elements
sharper the image
smaller

800 x 600
Most common

CT002-4-0 Computing and IT Computer Historical Perspective & Future Trends

Displays
• What is refresh rate?
 Speed at which monitor redraws images on the
screen
 Should be fast enough to maintain a constant,
flicker-free image
 High-quality monitor will provide refresh rate of
at least 75 hertz
 Image on the screen redraws itself 75 times
per second

CT002-4-0 Computing and IT Computer Historical Perspective & Future Trends

Printers
• What is a printer?
 Output device that Various ways user
produces text and print documents and
graphics on a physical pictures
medium
Cable via USB or
 Result is hard copy, or parallel port
printout Wireless printing
 Two orientations: Bluetooth
portrait and landscape infrared
Media cards
Docking station
Central printer on
network
CT002-4-0 Computing and IT Computer Historical Perspective & Future Trends
Printers
• What is a nonimpact printer?

 Forms characters and graphics without striking

paper

What is a impact printer?

 Forms characters and graphics on a piece of
paper by striking a mechanism against an inked
ribbon that physically contacts the paper.

CT002-4-0 Computing and IT Computer Historical Perspective & Future Trends

Printers
• What is the resolution of a printer?
 Sharpness and clarity
 Measured by number of dots per inch (dpi)
printer
can output

CT002-4-0 Computing and IT Computer Historical Perspective & Future Trends

Printers
• What is a dot-matrix printer?
 Impact printer that produces printed images
when tiny wire pins strike ribbon
 Impact printer forms
characters by striking
mechanism against inked
ribbon that contacts paper

CT002-4-0 Computing and IT Computer Historical Perspective & Future Trends

Printers
• What is a line printer?
 High-speed impact
printer that prints entire
line
at a time
 Speed measured in
lines per minute (lpm)
 Band printer prints fully
formed characters using
a hammer mechanism
 Shuttle-matrix printer is
high-speed printer that
works like dot-matrix
printer

Speakers, Headphones, and
Headsets
• What is an audio output device?
 Computer component that produces music, speech, or
other sounds
 Speakers and headsets are common devices
