What is Concrete ?

Concrete is a construction material composed of cement, fine aggregates (sand) and coarse
aggregates mixed with water which hardens with time. Portland cement is the commonly used
type of cement for production of concrete.

In a building construction, concrete is used for the construction of foundations, columns,

beams, slabs and other load bearing elements.

Concrete technology deals with study of properties of concrete and its practical applications.

Concrete can be casted in any shape. Since it is a plastic material in fresh state, various shapes
and sizes of forms or formworks are used to provide different shapes such as rectangular,
circular etc.
Components of Concrete

Components of concrete are cement, sand, aggregates and water. Mixture of Portland
cement and water is called as paste. So, concrete can be called as a mixture of paste,
sand and aggregates. Sometimes rocks are used instead of aggregates.

The cement paste coats the surface of the fine and coarse aggregates when mixed
thoroughly and binds them. Soon after mixing the components, hydration reaction starts
which provides strength and a rock solid concrete is obtained.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Concrete

Advantages

● Ability to be cast into any shape

● Economical and durable
● Fire resistant
● Ingredients of concrete are easily available in most of the places.

Disadvantages

● Compared to other binding materials, the tensile strength of concrete is relatively low.
● Concrete is less ductile.
● Concrete may contains soluble salts. Soluble salts cause efflorescence.
● Low strength to weight ratio
RCC: Reinforced Cement Concrete

RCC is a composite material in which concrete's relatively low tensile strength and ductility are
counteracted by the inclusion of reinforcement having higher tensile strength or ductili

Reinforcing bar is an important component

of reinforced concrete.

It is usually made up of rigged carbon steel,

ridges give frictional adhesion to concrete

Rebar is ued because although concrete is very

strong in compression but weak in tension
RCC: Properties and Uses

Requirements of good RCC:

● It should be capable of resisting tensile, compresive, shearing and bending forces

● It should not show excessive deflection
● Reinforcements should be properly covered to prevent corrosion
● It should be fire resistant, durable and can be casted in any shape

Uses:

● As structural element : beams, columns, footings, lintels etc

● As construction of storage structures: dams, tanks, silos, bunkers stc
● As construction of big structures: bridges, retaining walls, underwater construction
● As pre-casting: railway sleepers, electric poles
Ready Mixed Concrete

Ready-mix concrete is concrete that is manufactured in a batch plant, according to a set

engineered mix design. Ready-mix concrete is normally delivered in two ways.

First is the barrel truck or in–transit mixers. This type of truck delivers concrete in a plastic
state to the site.

Second is the volumetric concrete mixer. This delivers the ready mix in a dry state and then
mixes the concrete on site.
Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages:

● Better quality is produced in lesser time

● Wastage of materials is reduced
● Elimination of storage space at the site
● Labour associated with production of concrete is eliminated

Disadvantages

● Materials are combined in a batch plant, and the hydration process begins at the
moment water meets the cement, so the travel time from the plant to the site, and the
time before the concrete is placed on site, is critical over longer distances.
● Concrete is formable and pourable, but a steady supply is needed for large forms. If there
is a supply interruption, and the concrete cannot be poured all at once, a cold joint may
appear in the finished form.
Lightweight Concrete

Lightweight concrete mixture is made with a lightweight coarse aggregate and sometimes a
portion or entire fine aggregates may be lightweight instead of normal aggregates.

Lightweight aggregates used in structural lightweight concrete are typically expanded shale,
clay or slate materials that have been fired in a rotary kiln to develop a porous structure. Other
products such as air-cooled blast furnace slag are also used.
Properties and Uses

Properties:

● The most significant property of lightweight concrete is reduced weight at no sacrifice in

strength.
● Lightweight Concrete provides the same compressive strength as normal weight
aggregates with approximately the same cement content.

Uses:

● Construction of partition walls and panel walls in frame structures.

● Heat insulation on roofs.
● Insulating water pipes.
● Casting structural steel to protect its against fire and corrosion or as a covering for
architectural purposes.
