▪ What is Asphalt

▪ DPC
▪ Asphalt is a kind of water-repellent organic binding material,
and at room temperature, it is a black or dark brown thick
liquid, semisolid or solid.
▪ It may be found in natural deposits or may be a refined product,
and is classed as a pitch. Before the 20th century, the term
asphaltum was also used.
▪ The primary use (70%) of asphalt is in road construction, where
it is used as the glue or binder mixed with aggregate particles
to create asphalt concrete. Its other main uses are for
bituminous waterproofing products, including production of
roofing felt and for sealing flat roofs.
▪ Waterproof Property
▪ The asphalt is water-repellent material, and it has compact structure and can’t dissolve
in water, and meanwhile it has good plasticity, adhesion ability and bond force with
mineral materials so that it is assumed to be well waterproof.

▪ Viscosity
▪ Viscosity is a kind of ability reflecting that the materials inside asphalt hinder its
fluidity. Viscosity also reflects the hardness and density of asphalt.

▪ Plasticity
▪ Plasticity means the asphalt deforms without being destroyed in the circumstance of
external force, and when the external force is excluded, the asphalt remains the
deformed shape, expressed by ductility.
▪ Temperature Sensitivity
▪ Temperature sensitivity of asphalt means the property that the viscosity and the
plasticity of asphalt change with the temperature change.

▪ The stability of asphalt in atmosphere

▪ The stability of asphalt in atmosphere means the asphalt’s property of resisting the
aging in the comprehensive environment of heat, sunshine and atmosphere for a long
run.

▪ Workability
▪ Workability describes the ease with which a paving mixture can be placed and
compacted. Mixtures with good workability are easy to place and compact; those with
poor workability are difficult to place and compact
▪ The vast majority of refined asphalt is used in construction: primarily as a
constituent of products used in paving and roofing applications.
▪ Approximately 85% of all the asphalt produced is used as the binder in asphalt
concrete for roads.
▪ It is also used in other paved areas such as airport runways, car parks and
footways.
▪ Typically, the production of asphalt concrete involves mixing fine and coarse
aggregates such as sand, gravel and crushed rock with asphalt, which acts as the
binding agent.
▪ A further 10% of global asphalt production is used in roofing applications, where
its waterproofing qualities are invaluable.
▪ The remaining 5% of asphalt is used mainly for sealing and insulating purposes in
a variety of building materials, such as pipe coatings, carpet tile backing and paint.
▪ Highways ▪ Reservoir and pool linings
▪ Airport runways ▪ Soundproofing
▪ Footways and pedestrian ways ▪ Pipe coatings
▪ Car parks ▪ Cable coatings
▪ Racetracks ▪ Paints
▪ Tennis courts ▪ Building water proofing
▪ Roofing ▪ Tile underlying waterproofing
▪ Damp proofing ▪ Newspaper ink production
▪ Dams
▪ Asphalt coating is a type of coating used for waterproofing and

flexible protective coat in accordance with its formulation and

polymerization grade. Its flexibility and protection against water can
be influenced by the polymer grade as well as reinforcement of fiber.

▪ It is an excellent protective coating and waterproofing agent,

especially on surfaces such as concrete foundations.

▪ Damp proofing in construction is a type of moisture control applied to building
walls and floors to prevent moisture from passing into the interior spaces.
Dampness problems are among the most frequent problems encountered in
residences.
▪ It is defined as a material that resists the passage of water with no hydrostatic
pressure and waterproof as a treatment that resists the passage of water under
pressure. Generally, damp proofing keeps moisture out of a building where vapor
barriers keep interior moisture from getting into walls.
▪ Asphalt or Bitumen is widely used for Damp proofing due to its water repellent
properties and high endurance.
