An electric bicycle, also known as an e- bike or
booster bike It has integrated electric motor
which can be used for propulsion.
I t has great variety of different t y pes b u t some common
are:-
1.small motor-pedal power
2 . powerful bikes closer t o moped
E- bikes use rechargeable b a t teries and t h e lighter
varieties can travel up t o 2 5 t o 3 2 k m / h (16 t o
2 0 m p h ) , depending on t h e laws of t h e country
in which t h e y are sold, while t h e more high-
powered varieties can of t e n do in excess of 4 5 k m / h ( 2 8
mph). Website :www.vpmp.ac.in
In t h e 1890s, electric bicycles were documented
within various U.S. patents.
on 31 December 18 95 , Ogden Bolton
J r. was granted U.S. P a t en t
5 5 2 , 2 7 1 for a ba t t ery- powered bicycle.
Therewere no gears and t h e motor could
draw up to 1 0 0 amperes (A) from
a 10-volt batt ery.
Two years later, in 1897, Hosea W. Libbey of
Boston invented an electric bicycle ( U . S . P a t e n t
5 9 6 , 2 7 2 ) t h a t was propelled by a
“double electric motor”. Website :www.vpmp.ac.in
E-bikes are classed according t o t h e power t h a t their
electric m o tor can deliver and t h e control s y s te m , i.e.,
when and how t h e power from t h e motor is applied.
With pedal-assist t h e electric motor is regulated by
pedalling. The pedal- assis t augments t h e efforts of t he
rider when t h e y are pedalling. These e-bikes –
called pedelecs – have a sensor t o d e t e c t t h e pedalling
speed, t h e pedalling force, or both. Brake activation is
sensed t o disable t h e motor as well.
With power-on-demand t h e motor is activated by
a t h ro t t l e, usually handlebar-mounted just like on m o s t
motorcycles or scooters.

A battery produces
energy t h a t transfer t o
kinetic energy in t h e
tyres and moves t h e m
forward.

E-bike usage worldwide has experienced rapid
growth since 19 98. I t is estimated t h a t there
were roughly 12 0 million e- bikes in China in early
2 0 1 0 , and sales are expanding rapidly in India,
t h e United S t a t e s of America, t h e Netherlands,
and Switzerland. A total of 7 0 0 , 0 0 0 e-bikes
were sold in Europe in 2 0 1 0 , up from 2 0 0 , 0 0 0 in
2 0 0 7 and 5 0 0 , 0 0 0 units in 2 0 0 9 .
Today, China is t h e world's leading producer of e-
bikes.

1. MOTOR
The t w o m o s t common types of hub
motors used in electric bicycles are
brushed and brushless. There are many
possible types of electric motorized
bicycles with several technologies
available, varying in cost and complexity;
direct-drive and geared motor units are
both used.

Battery systemsinuseincludesealedlead- acid( S L

(N i MH ) orlithium-ion polymer (Li-
ion).
Batteries vary according t o t h e voltage,
total charge capacity (amp hours), weight,
t h e number of chargingcycles before
performance degrades, and ability t o handle
over-voltage charging conditions.

3.CONTROLLERS
There are t wo distin c t t y pes of controllers designed t o
match either a brushedmot or or
brushlessmot or.
Controllers for brushless motors:brushless motors typically
have Hallsensor commutation for speed measurement. The
controllers generally provide potentiometer-adjustable motor
speed, closed- loop speed control for precise speed regulation,
pro tection logic for over- voltage , over- current and thermal
protection. The controller uses pulsewidthmodulation
t o regulate t h e power t o t h e mot or.
Controllers for brushed motors: Brushed motors are also
used in e-bikes b u t are becoming less common due t o their
intrinsic lower efficiency. Controllers for brushed motors
however are m uch simpler and cheaper due t o t h e fact they
don't require hallsensor
