ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS

Look at these examples:
Sam is a careful driver.
Sam drives carefully.
Look at these examples:
Sam is a careful driver. (This sentence is about Sam, the driver,
It is adjective.
Sam drives carefully. (This sentence is about his way of driving,
It is adverb.)
ADJECTIVES
• Adjectives usually provide information about the nouns/pronouns. We use
them before a noun and after the verb to be.
You can see homeless people everywhere.
They are poor.
Those are expensive rings.
The bus is late.
It gives us information about quality, size, shape, duration, feelings and
contents.
EXAMPLES

• I have a fast car. (The word ‘fast’ is describing an attribute of the car)
• Mary is hungry. (The word ‘hungry’ is providing information about
the subject)

ADVERBS
ADVERBS

Adverbs (quickly/carefully …) tell us about a verb (how somebody


does something or how something happens). Adverbs usually go
after verbs.
It rains heavily . ( How does it rain?- Heavily)
(adverb of manner )
John is here. (Where is he? – Here – adverb of place.)
I sleep late every friday. ( when does he sleep?- Late- Time)
• Sometimes adverbs go before the main verb. The adverbs of
frequency describe how often someting happens.

Usually,
sometimes, They sometimes play tennis on Sundays.
never,
always, often
etc.
FORM

 We usually form an adverb by adding –ly to the adjective.


adjective: quick, serious, careful, quiet, bad
adverb: quickly, seriously, carefully, quietly, badly
 Adjectives ending in –le drop the –e and take + -y :
probable- probably Simple- simply
 Adjectives ending in a consanant –y drop the –y and take +–ily.
heavy-heavily
 Adjectives ending in –l take +-ly. Hopeful-hopefully
Some adverbs have a totally different form, or the same form as the
objective:

► NOT ALL WORDS ENDING IN -LY ARE ADVERBS:

Adjectives ending in -ly: friendly, silly, lonely, ugly


Nouns, ending in -ly: ally, bully, Italy, melancholy
Verbs, ending in -ly: apply, rely, supply
