Final Year Project(FYP):Purpose /Objective

As part of their fourth year, students are required to carry out a project and
submit a technical report.
This project is a substantial piece of work that will require creative activity and
original thinking.
Students in groups, normally three per group, are supervised while working on a
project accounting for four credit hours, extending over a full academic year.
The project aims to provide students with a transitional experience from the
academic world to the professional world.
It is designed to serve as a platform in which Engineering Technology students in
teams engage in a meaningful design experience requiring the solution of
engineering design projects
Final Year Project(FYP):Purpose /Objective

• To allow students to demonstrate a wide range of the skills learned at the

Department /College of Engineering Technology during their course of study by
asking them to deliver a product that has passed through the analysis, design, testing,
evaluation, training and documentation.

• To encourage multidisciplinary research through the integration learned in a number of

courses.

• To allow students to develop problem solving, analysis, synthesis and evaluation skills.

• To encourage teamwork.

• To improve students' communication skills by asking them to produce both a

professional report and a professional poster and to give an oral presentation
Final Year Project(FYP):Purpose /Objective

to provide students an opportunity to apply the knowledge they have

learnt, their intellectual abilities and practical skills to solving real, or
close to real life engineering problems.
To offer students an opportunity to demonstrate their competence in
laboratory work.
To encourage multidisciplinary research through the integration learned
in a number of courses.
To allow students to develop problem solving.

Presentational Skills.
Ability to Communicate.
How to write project report.
To allow students to develop problem solving.
Team work
Leadership etc
Final Year Project(FYP): Importance
The project is important for a number of reasons:
• It is the largest single piece of design work that a student does during his/her
BE degree program.

• It allows students to specialize in a topic that they enjoy.

• It is the work that prospective employers will most likely ask students about
during an interview.

• It allows students to show a wide range of the skills learned since the first year.

• Students must demonstrate these skills by delivering a product that has

passed through the analysis, design, manufacturing, testing and evaluation
Final Year Project(FYP): Objectives
When we say SMART it means intelligent, but it also means the SMART system.
SMART is an acronym to help you make sure your objectives are clear and
achievable. SMART goals are used in various ways by all sorts of teams,
especially within final year project management. SMART stands for:
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
Time-bound
Final Year Project(FYP): Objectives

Points to consider about project objectives(SMART)

Set your project objectives at the beginning of your project.

Involve your project team in the goal-setting process.

Create brief, but clear, project objective statements

Make sure your objectives are things you can control

Final Year Project(FYP): Objectives

Specific.
Make sure your objective statement clearly covers the project your team is
currently working on.

Avoid writing overly broad project objectives that don’t directly connect to the
result of the project.
Final Year Project(FYP): Objectives

Measurable.

At the end of your project, you need a way to clearly look back and determine if
your project was a success.

Make sure your project objectives are clearly measurable things

—like percentage change or a specific number of assets.
Final Year Project(FYP): Objectives

Achievable.
Are your project objectives something you can reasonably hope to achieve
within your project?

The “A” in SMART project objectives ties in to your project scope

—if your project scope is unrealistic, your project objectives

likely will be, too. Without Achievable project goals, your project may suffer
from scope problems, delays, or overwork.
Final Year Project(FYP): Objectives
Realistic.

When you’re creating your project objectives, you should have a general sense
of your project resources.

Make sure your objectives are something you can achieve within the time
frame and with the resources you have available for this project.
Final Year Project(FYP): Objectives
Time-bound.

Your project objectives should take into account how long your project timeline
is.

As part of your SMART objectives, make sure you factor in the time you have
available to work on your project.
