Hujan asam adalah istilah umum untuk
mengambarkan beberapa cara asam
keluar dari atmosfer. Istilah yang
lebih tepat adalah pengendapan

 Proses terjadinya hujan asam di bumi berasal dari beragam aktivitas baik

ke dalam udara dari ketel-ketel (boilers) di pabrik-pabrik, dan
pembangkit tenaga listrik, juga dari gas buang kendaraan bermotor.

 polutan SO2, SO3, NO2, dan HNO3, serta butir-butir uap air akan
membentuk asam sulfat dan asam nitrat dengan bantuan cahaya matahari
dan ikut terlarut dalam awan serta sebagian ikut diterbangkan angin yang
kemudian akan tertinggal di pohon, bangunan atau masuk ke pernafasan.

 Sedangkan bagian yang terlarut dengan awan akan menjadikan pH air

hujan kurang dari 5,60. lalu akan jatuh ke bumi dalam bentuk hujan,
salju, kabut.

 Robert Boyle adalah orang yang pertama memperkenalkan fenomena hujan
asam di awal abad 17 dan menggambarkan fenomena hujan asam dengan
istilah “Nitrous or salino-sulforus spiris“.
 Abad ke-18 merebaknya penggunaan bahan bakar batubara dan minyak
sebagai sumber utama energi untuk mesin-mesin saat revolusi industri di
Eropa menjadi faktor utama meningkatnya gas SO2, SO3, NO2 di atmosfer.
 Selain itu, kebakaran hutan dan letusan gunung menyebabkan meningkatnya
emisi gas rumah kaca dan gas polutan lainnya.
 Peningkatan emisi gas-gas hasil pembakaran bahan bakar dan biomassa
seperti Karbon Dioksida (CO2), Karbon Monoksida (CO), Sulfur Dioksida
(SO2), Nitrogen Oksida (NOx), Dinitrogen Oksida (N2O), Metana (CH4),
hidrokarbon lain dan aerosol ke udara akan memengaruhi konsentrasi Ozon
(O3) dan berdampak pada terjadinya hujan asam.

 Tanggal 6 Agusus 1996, kementrian lingkungan hidup mencetuskan
program langit biru.
 bertujuan mengendalikan pencemaran udara, khususnya yang
bersumber dari sektor transportasi untuk mencapai kualitas udara
ambien yang memenuhi standar kesehatan manusia dan makhluk
hidup yang lain.
 Upaya pengendalian yang terkait dengan program tersebut antara
lain adalah: pemantauan kualitas udara ambien, pengendalian
pencemaran udara dari sarana transportasi, dan memperluas taman-
taman kota.
Upaya yang dapat dilakukan masyarakat guna mendukung
pencegahan terjadinya hujan asam dapat kita lakukan cara-cara
sebagai berikut: 
Pemilihan bahan bakar untuk mengurangi produksi gas yang
dapat menyebabkan hujan asam. Bahan bakar tersebut contohnya
bahan bakar yang mengandung belerang atau bahan bakar alternatif
seperti methanol, etanol dan hydrogen yang rendah.
Menerapkan 3R, yaitu Reuse, Recycle dan Reduce. Dengan cara
ini barang dapat digunakan kembali atau didaur ulang sehingga
mengurangi jumlah sampah/limbah yang dihasilkan. 
Reboisasi dan penanaman kembali. Reboisasi dan rehabilitas
lahan dapat meningkatkan produktivitas lahan dan kualitas
lingkungan. 
Penambahan zat kapur, agar tanah tetap kaya dengan senyawa
kapur yang dapat menetralkan sifat asam dan mencegah tanaman
mudah layu.
