WHO ARE SCHOOL PARTNERS IN SCHOOL LIBRARY ESTABLISHMENT,
IMPROVEMENT, AND MANAGEMENT?

How do they help school libraries?


• Provision of technical assistance and training, e.g.,
seminar on library standards, operations
 
WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF LIBRARY STANDARDS
ACCORDING TO THE PRC-BFL IN COMPLIANCE WITH RA 9246?

• Collection must maintain a local history collection composed of materials about


the school community, its history, programs, people, etc.
• 20% of the collection must have been published in the last 10 years
• A written collection development policy must be created
• the library must be able to accommodate at least 10% of the total school
population.
• 1/3 of the space must be devoted to the collection, 2/3 to users.

What If a teacher or a librarian sees discrepancy or questionable facts published in a
textbook? they can ask help from these offices.
Concerning educational materials, there are certain offices under the Department of
Education (DepEd) which are responsible for evaluating and approving instructional and
supplementary materials. Instructional Materials Council (IMC) is responsible for the
approval of all instructional materials used in government schools.  
TEACHERS

• They are facilitators and players in promoting collaborative learning 


• They advance the role of school libraries as places to collaborate  
• Teachers use the school library to develop 21 st century teaching skills, including the use of
media and ICT skills.
• They encourage students to practice fair use when using library resources or when making
their own media and essays. They help explain the rules of Copyright and the through their
regular lessons.
• Collaborating with the librarian with regard to collection development.
SCHOOL HEADS/ADMINISTRATORS

• Their support is key to improving library infrastructure, purchasing new


furniture, getting or upgrading library systems, and other big changes in the
library.  
• He/she will be the one to sign letters of intent or letters asking for book
donations or interlibrary loan requests from other organizations.
•  They also show their support by allowing the librarian or teacher-in-charge
to pursue training and attend professional development seminars pertaining
to librarianship.
COMMUNITY/STAKEHOLDERS

• Other libraries, including public libraries.


The school library can enter resource sharing agreements with other
libraries to increase the opportunities to intensify the collection and
services.

Examples of these resource sharing agreements are KOHA and


interlibrary loans.
KOHA

• Koha is an open source Integrated Library System (ILS), used world-wide by public,
school, and special libraries.
• Training for its use and installation is offered by the National Library of the Philippines.

WHAT IS INTERLIBRARY LOAN?

Interlibrary loan is a way for the school library media


center to request for materials from other libraries who
they established linkages with. Basically, the school
library librarian and school head vouch for the student
who wants to borrow a book from the other library.

• Government Organizations, such as DOST, which installs
Starbooks for free
PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS WITH EDUCATION
ADVOCACY
• Firth Mceachern “Mr. Ilocanadian”
is a Canadian mother tongue
advocate who speaks fluent Ilocano
and has worked with the provincial
government of La Union to lobby
for Ilocano to become a language
and not merely a dialect. He donates
books on mother tongue instruction.
• Alfredo F. Tadiar Library, an independent research
library in the City of San Fernando, La Union,
established in 2017.
