Step 5 - Scheduling

Gantt Chart

• The horizontal axis represents the total time of the project

• The vertical axis shows the tasks that make up the project
• Projects activity are shown as rectangles or nodes, and milestones
by diamonds.
• Size of the rectangles or node represents the duration of that
activity.
• They do not show the relationships between tasks.

Example of Gantt chart

• Critical paths: Activities on the critical path cannot be delayed without

delaying the project overall.
• Slack/Float: is the amount of time a task can slip before it bumps into
another task.
• Free slack: it is the time this activity can be delayed without impact on
the following activity.
• Total slack: is the time this activity can be delayed without impact on
the finish date of the project
• The other two are independent slack and interfering slack.

To identify slack time in your project you need to focus on activities that
do not lie on the critical path. You work your way backwards through your
project until you meet one of these activities.

Lesson 5: Activity
Draw a line in between to finish the sentence

The Gantt chart cannot be delayed without delaying the project

overall.
The activities on a critical path As rectangles and the size of the rectangles or
node represents the duration of that activity.
Project activities are represented lets you communicate your project timeline
visually in an easy to understand way
Slack/float is the amount of time a task can slip before it
bumps into another task
