Handcraft is a type of craft where people make things using
only their hands or basic tools. The items are usually
decorative and have a particular use. Usually, the term
WHAT ARE refers to traditional methods of making things.
The items often have cultural or religious value. Things
HANDICRAFTS made by mass production or machines are not handcrafts
goods. In Bangladesh we can see many handicrafts living
? there live only by making handicraft objects. Also,
handicraft things are different from ‘arts and craft’ because
they are meant to be used for something. Handicraft items
are generally contrasted with mass production.
THE IMPORTANCE OF HANDICRAFT

• Handicraft is very important because represents our culture and tradition. It

promotes the heritage of a country using indigenous materials and it preserves
traditional knowledge and talents. Handicraft is the expression of our history and I
think we must encourage artisans to continue the craft production to show the
beauty of this art.
• “Products which are produced either completely by hand or with the help of tools. Mechanical
tools may be used if thedirect manual contribution of the artisan remains the most substantial
component of the finished product. Handicrafts are made from raw materials and can be produced
in unlimited numbers. Such products can be utilitarian, aesthetic, artistic, creative, culturally
attached, decorative, functional, traditional, religiously and socially symbolic and significant”.

• Handicrafts are amongst the oldest traditions in the world. Among
the many handicrafts around the world, Indian Handicrafts Items
goes back to one of the oldest civilizations in the world, the Indus
Valley Civilization.
• The handicrafts industry in India flourished, during the mediaeval
period, and continued to grow until the beginning of British came
India. After the arrival of the British, and other colonial powers in
India, the handicrafts industry struggled to keep up with the foreign

History of market. As the handicrafts industry was entirely based on the skills
of one’s hands, it took time and hard work to complete a creation.
As a result, the price of which it was to be sold was also high. But
Handicraft the machine-made British goods, were cheaper, and soon people
began to drift towards the British market.
• Another reason for the British taking over the handicrafts Industry
is the fact that the raw materials that were needed for making
various items were derived from nature, and so they were not
meant to last for long. So the process by which the finished
products were made to last longer be time-consuming, and also
costly.
