The area now called England was first inhabited by modern
humans in the Upper Paleolithic, but takes its name from Angli, a
Germanic tribe that derives its name from the England peninsula,
which settled in the 5th and 6th centuries. -lea. England became a
unified state in the tenth century, and since its discovery, which
began in the fifteenth century, has had a significant cultural and
legal impact on the wider world. The English language, the
Anglican Communion and English law - the basis of the common
law legal systems of many other countries around the world -
developed in England, and the country's system of parliamentary
governance was widely adopted by other nations. started in
eighteenth-century England, transforming society into the world's
first industrialized nation.
The relief of England is mainly hills and low plains, especially in
central and southern England. However, there is a higher and
mountainous relief in the north (e.g., Lake District and Penini)
and in the west (e.g., Dartmoor and Shropshire Hills). The capital
is London, which has the largest metropolitan area in both the
United Kingdom and the European Union before Brexit.
England's population of over 55 million comprises 84% ​of the
UK's population, largely concentrated around London, South
East England and the conurbations of the Midlands, North West,
North East and Yorkshire, each of which has developed as major
