OBJECTIVES:

 Explain light as electromagnetic radiation.

 Identify types of radiation in the electromagnetic spectrum.
 Describe the propagation of light, reflection and refraction are explained
by the wave model and the particle model of light.
 Describe what happens when light is reflected, refracted, transmitted,
and absorbed.
 Explain how Newton and Descartes described the emergence of light in
various colors though prisms.
IMPORTANT TERMS:

Diffraction Reflection
Electromagnetic Refraction
spectrum Scattering
Electromagnetic wave Transparent
Diffraction
the bending of light that passes around
an obstacle or through a narrow slit.
Electromagnetic spectrum
the range of frequencies over which
electromagnetic radiation can be propagated
Electromagnetic wave
an energy carrying wave emitted by
vibrating charges that is composed of oscillating
electric and magnetic fields that regenerate one
another.
Reflection
the bouncing back of a particle or wave
that strikes the boundary between two media.
Refraction
the change in direction of a wave as it
crosses the boundary between two media in
which the wave travels at different speeds.
Scattering
emission in random directions of light
that encounters particles that are small
compared to the wavelength of light.
Transparent
the term applied to materials that allow
light to pass through them in a straight lines.

ACTS AS
A WAVE
AND A
PARTICLE
WHAT IS LIGHT?

usually refers to visible

light, which is the
portion of the spectrum
that can be perceived
by the human eye.
Light behaves both as a
particle and as a wave.
LIGHT AS A PARTICLE AND A WAVE

Einstein believed light is a particle (photon) and

the flow of photons is a wave.
HOW IMPORTANT IS LIGHT?
LIGHT IS AN ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION
 All wavelengths of
light constitute in
the
“electromagnetic
spectrum”.
 Visible light is a
tiny portion of this.
THE EMERGENCE OF LIGHT

His studies included the emergence of

colors as light passed through a prism.
In his experiment, he saw that the red
light refracted the least while the violet light
refracted the most.
According to Newton, this difference in
refraction occurred due to the differences in
the mass of the colors of light.
THE EMERGENCE OF LIGHT

In one of his experiments, he produced a

rainbow by using a water-filled glass sphere and
sunlight.
He explained that refraction of light caused
the formation of rainbows. He then studied the
refraction and emergence of colors of light in a
prism.
He observed that the different colors of light
refracted at varying degrees. He noted that the
red light refracted more than the blue light.

PRACTICE:

1.Why is glass transparent to visible light but not to

UV and infrared light?
2.Why do opaque materials become warmer when
light shows on them?
3.Why do objects look darker when they are wet than
when they are dry?
