ENGLISH TERMINOLOGY OF THE

INTERNATIONAL TOURISM:
TRANSLATION ASPECT

The relevance of our investigation is determined by the growing
number of tourist sites, which are becoming an increasingly popular
source of information about travel services. That`s why there is a
need for a thorough study and analysis of English terminology of
international tourism as a problem of translation, as well as the need
to cover the ways of its translation from English into Ukrainian.

The objective of the study is to identify the structural features of


English terminology of international tourism and to analyze the
translation techniques and transformations that are used to
reproduce this terminology by means of the Ukrainian language.
The objective defined the tasks:

- to reveal the concept of term and terminological system;


- to study the peculiarities of the formation and development
of the English terminology of international tourism;
- to carry out the structural analysis of the English
terminology of the sphere of international tourism;

- to define the main ways of reproducing the English terms


of international tourism by means of the Ukrainian
language;
- to find out the difficulties of the English-Ukrainian
translation of the terms of international tourism.
 The object of the research is English tourist
terminology.
 The subject of the research is the structural
features of the English terminology of international
tourism and difficulties of its reproduction by
means of the Ukrainian language.
 The research material is English explanatory
dictionaries, etymological and encyclopedic
dictionaries, periodicals in English, websites of
travel agencies.
The theoretical significance of the investigation
lies in the fact that the analysis of English
terminology of international tourism enriches and
expands the theoretical foundations of
terminology, lexicology and translation, which is
important for further study of the formation and
functioning of other terms in other languages.
The work also contributes to the fuller
understanding of the functioning of English terms
in the field of international tourism.
The practical importance of the research
lies in the fact that its results can be used in
the process of further linguistic research, as
well as in the preparation of textbooks and
special courses on terminology and
translation studies. The data obtained can
also contribute to further terminology
research and the application of the principles
of translation terms in the field of international
tourism in practice.
Terminology
 Terminology is a set of terms of a particular
field of knowledge, as well as the science of
the composition and functioning of terms.
 Terms exist within a certain terminology, they
are included in a specific lexical system of the
language. A terminological system is an
ordered set of terms with fixed relationships
between them, reflecting the relationship
between the concepts called by these terms.

Translation of linguistic realias: kilt – кілт,
шотландська картата спідниця, традиційний одяг
шотландських чоловіків,
Translation of abbreviations: B&B – bed and
breakfast, IATA – International Air Transport Association;
Cases of polysemy: AA – American Airlines
(Американські авіалінії), Aerolineas Argentinas
(Аргентинські авіалінії), Automobile Association
(Автомобільна асоціація).
The prospect of further scientific research is seen
in the analyzing other methods and techniques for
translating terms of international tourism taking into
account the speech context of the use of terminology,
which determines its communicative and functional
purpose and features of use. Іt is worth analyzing the
role of synonymy in the formation of terminology in
the new areas of knowledge.
