Permutation &

Combinations
The various ways in which objects from a set may be
selected, generally without replacement, to form
subsets may be described by either a permutation or
a combination.

When the order of the arrangement matters, we have a permutation.

When the order of the arrangement does not matter, we have a


combination
Permutation Combination

Permutation
There are basically two types of permutation:

• Repetition is Allowed: such as the lock above. It could

be "333".

• No Repetition: for example the first three people in a

running race. You can't be first and second.


Permutations with Repetitions

 
When a thing has n different types ... we have n choices each
time!
For example: choosing 3 of those things, the permutations are:

where n is the number of things to choose from,


and we choose r of them,
repetition is allowed,
and order matters.
A password must consist of 7 characters. The characters can be either numerical

digits (0 to 9) or letters of the alphabet (A-Z). How many possible passwords are

there?
Each character can be chosen from each of the 10
digits or each of the 26 letters, therefore there are 36
characters to choose from

Permutations without Repetitions

In this instance, the number of the possible choices have to be


reduced each time

Example: what order could 16 pool balls be chosen in?

There are 16 possible choices for the ball, but after this has been chosen, only 15 choices are
left. After choosing the second ball only 14 left…

Combinations
Think of how lotteries work, once we have the correct numbers,

no matter how they’re drawn we win. With combinations:

• Assume that the order doesn’t matter.

• Alter it so that the order doesn’t matter.


Going back to our pool ball example, let's say we just want to know which 3
pool balls are chosen, not the order.

Let us say balls 16, 15 and 14 are chosen. The possibilities are:
16, 15, 14
16, 14, 15, There are 3! ways the same numbers can be chosen

15, 16, 14, To avoid this duplication, we must reduce it by how


many ways the objects could be in order
