Definition Progressive Tense

Present continuous tense or present progressive


tense is a form of verb used to express an action
that is taking place now (present) or plans in the
future (future).

1. a monkey is painting on drawing paper

Simple Past Progressive Tense formula.

In the use of the simple past progressive tense or


the past continuous tense before the present
participle which ends in -ing, the auxiliary verb (be)
is placed, namely was and were. Below is the
formula used in positive, negative and
interrogative sentences:

1. Singular noun, I / he / she / it / John / Mary= "was’’

2. Plural noun, You / we / they / books / cars / John and Mary = "were"
positive sentence

S + auxiliary verb (was/were) + Verb- Sally was packing her books into her
ing schoolbag

Mom was cooking our lunch when I


came home.

They were writing letter


Negative sentence
S + auxiliary verb (was/were) + not + Sally was not packing her books into
Verb-ing her schoolbag.

Mom was not cooking our lunch


when I came home.
Interrogative
Auxiliary verb (was/were) + S + Was Sally packing her books into her
Verb-ing schoolbag?

Simple Past Progressive Tense
Sentence Functions.
1. Talking about an activity that occurred during a
certain period in the past. The time
information that can be used is as follows:

Example of sentences;

2. They were sleeping at this time last night.


3. Mom was cooking at this morning.
2. Shows that there is a short duration event that
occurs when a long duration event is taking place.
Consider two examples of sentence patterns:
• Simple past tense + while + past continuous
tense.
• Past continuous tense + when + simple past
tense.

A thief broke into his house while he was sleeping last night.

He was sleeping when a thief broke into his house last night .
3. Shows repeated events in the past or habits in
the past.

Example:

My daughter was always snoring while she


sleep.
