Draft Reading and Precaution
 Momentary Standstill of Seawater

 Exaggerated by the flow of Tide or River

 Misreading on F/A draft will impact the QM by 1/8

 Misreading on Mid draft will impact the QM by 3/8

 Reading from above will exaggerate the value

 Reading at night in calm condition is difficult to sea the

water level. (throw small stone to generate ripple)
Measuring Seawater Density
Different Types of Seawater Hydrometer

 Load Line Hydrometer (Weight in Vacuum)

Mark with RD or Sp Gr and (T1/T2)

 Draft Survey Hydrometer (Weight in Air)

Mark with Kg/l and T

(1.025 measured by Load Line Hydrometer = 1.023

measured by Draft Survey Hydrometer)
Reading Hydrometer

Do not take the reading where the sample water touch
the edge of hydrometer (upper edge reading)
Take the parallel surface of the sample water
(horizontal surface reading)
Step by Step Calculation
1. Calculate Perpendicular draft (Draft Correction for
Fwd, Mid and Aft)
Draft Correction = (Trim x Distance)/LBM
Trim = Apparent Trim
Distance = Distance Between Draft Mark and Perpendicular
LBM = Length Between Draft Marks

Corrections are +,- Compared with Trim and position of

draft marks with respect to perpendiculars
2. Find Quarter Mean Draft (QM) (¼ Mean)

Mean of mean = (Corrected Mid + Corrected Mean)/2

QM = (Mean of Mean + Corrected Mid)/2

(OR)

QM = Corrected Mean Draft + (0.75 x Keel Deflection)

Keel Deflection (+/-) = Corrected Mid Draft – Corrected Mean Draft
Hogging “-” , Sagging “+”

(OR)

QM = [dF + dA + 6dM] / 8
3. Finding Displacement, LCF, TPC, MCTC from
Hydrostatic Table
Hydrostatic Table
4. 1st Trim Correction (T1)

(Trim x TPC x LCF x 100) / LBP

First Trim correction is +/-,

Trim & LCF are at both side + ,

Trim & LCF are at opposite side -,
(by the stern & +LCF aft of midship = +,
by the head & -LCF fwd of midship = +,
by the stern & -LCF fwd of midship = -,
by the head & +LCF aft of midship = -)
5. 2nd Trim Correction (T2)

(Trim x Trim x DMCTC x 50) / LBP

Second Trim correction is +/-
(Trim by the stern + , Trim by the Head -)

6. Corrected Displacement = Disp + T1 + T2

7. Density Correction (Dock Water Displacement)

(Corrected Displacement x Dock Water Density) / 1.025
8. Cargo Amount and/or Constant
