BASKETBALL COURT AND ITS DIMENSION
• A regulation court in international games is 91.9 feet (28.0 meters) long and 49.2 feet
(15 meters) wide. In the NBA and NCAA, the court is 94 by 50 feet (29 by 15 meters).
• There are various markings on the court, including a centre circle, free throw lanes,
and a three-point line, that help regulate play.
BASKETBALL BACKBOARD

• The backboard measures 6 by 3.5 feet (1.8

by 1.1 meters). There are in generally two
versions small sized and big sized
backgrounds.
• In the professional game the backboard is a
rectangle, 6 feet (1.8 metres) wide and 3.5 feet
(1.1 metres) high, made of a transparent material,
usually glass; it may be 4 feet (1.2 metres) high
in college.
BASKET (RIM AND NET)

• Basket:
– At almost all levels of competition,
the top of the rim is exactly 10 feet
(3.05 meters) above the court. The
basket is a steel rim 18 inches (46 cm)
diameter with an attached net.
BALL
– The size of the basketball is also regulated. For
men, the official ball is 29.5 inches (75 cm) in
circumference (size 7, or a “295 ball”) and
weighs 22 oz (623.69 grams). If women are
playing, the official basketball size is 28.5
inches (72 cm) in circumference (size 6, or a
“285 ball”) with a weight of 20 oz (567 grams).
– Its covering is leather or composition.

BASKETBALL UNIFORM
• When one starts coaching a basketball team,
the most important requirement for a team is
to have a uniform. This helps one
differentiate teams from one another. A
uniform consists of a jersey (shirt), shorts,
numbers on the front and back of the shirts
for identification
SHOT CLOCK

• The offense is allowed a maximum of 24

seconds to have a ball in hand before shooting.
These 24 seconds are counted on the shot clock.
If the offense fails to shoot a ball that hits the
rim, they will lose the possession of the ball to
the other team.
WHISTLE AND STOPWATCH

• The coach or referee uses a whistle to indicate the

start or end of a game. S/he can even use the whistle
to stop the play in the middle of a game. Whistle also
helps to indicate fouls, timeout, or out of bound balls
to the players. In order to get the attention of the
players, many times coaches use the whistle to gather
the players.
SCORESHEET/BOOK
• The score sheet is the official record
of the game. If there are any
disputes, the officials will refer to
the score sheet. Please check before
you start that all players are listed,
the coaches’ names are recorded,
and the correct teams named.

• It includes number of fouls, scores,

time-outs, quarter time, half time,
¾ time and end-of-the-game.
