Foreword
 Traditional WDM was always considered as “transparent” tunnel
for clients, it could only provide static optical channel path and
few protection schemes.
 With optical layer grooming technology, NG WDM can provide
dynamic optical channel path and relative protection and rerouting
functions.

 Serial OADM adopts the Thin Film Filter such as MR2 boards.
 MR2 is used to add/drop 2 wavelengths in the eastward/ westward direction.
 When more than two wavelengths are to be added/dropped, we can cascade more
MR2 boards or MR4/MR8 boards.

 Using MUX/DMUX connected back-to-back to add/drop any wavelengths

.
 OAs are needed for insertion loss compensation.
 REG OTU could be added into some optical channels.

Existing Problems on FOADM
 Wavelengths distribution in FOADM is fixed physically, it is not flexible.
 The wavelength services can not be activated in time.
 Maintenance personnel need to perform the on-site commissioning for
capacity expansion at each node.
 In case of wavelength adjustment, the maintenance personnel need to
perform on-site interference.
 The power budget will be changed by node expansion and wavelength
adjustment.

ROADM Introduction
 ROADM means re-configurable OADM. Both the pass-through and the
added/dropped wavelengths are re-configurable.
 The full meaning of ROADM is any wavelength can be added/dropped
to/from any ports.
 ROADM can solve the problems with physical budget of power, noise
and dispersion.
 The core components of the current ROADM are:
Planar Light Circuit (PLC), Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS).

 WSS (Taking WSD9 as example):

 Chromatic optical signal is de-multiplexed to monochromatic optical signals.
 VOAs adjust the power of each monochromatic optical signal.
 Then guide each of the monochromatic signals to different optical multiplexer by
controlling the 1 x N (that is N=9 in the figure) optical switch array.
 Finally transmit any monochromatic optical signal to any output port.
