UNITS AND DIMENSIONS
• What are units?
Measurement of any physical quantity involves comparison with a certain basic, arbitrarily
chosen, internationally accepted reference standard called unit.
The units for the fundamental or base quantities are called fundamental or base units
Such units obtained for the derived quantities are called derived units. A complete set of
these units, both the base units and derived units, is known as the system of units.
For example- kelvin , metre , kilogram , litre etc..
• What are dimensions?
The nature of a physical quantity is described by its dimensions. All the physical quantities
represented by derived units can be expressed in terms of some combination of seven
fundamental or base quantities.
The expression which shows how and which of the base quantities represent the dimensions
of a physical quantity is called the dimensional formula of the given physical quantity. For
example, the dimensional formula of the volume is [M° L3 T°]
An equation obtained by equating a physical quantity with its dimensional formula is called
the dimensional equation of the physical quantity.
For example- [V] = [M0 L3 T0] , [v] = [M0 L T–1] , [F] = [M L T–2] , [ρ] = [M L–3 T0] .
PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF UNITS
• Units have a lot of practical applications
People use units of measure so frequently in daily life that they hardly think about what they are
doing.
A motorist goes to the gas station and pumps 13 gallons (a measure of volume) into an automobile.
To pay for the gas, the motorist uses dollars—another unit of measure, economic rather than scientific
—in the form of paper money, a debit card, or a credit card.
Whenever we go to buy something in the market we always measure things and for that measurements
we use units like 1 Litre or 1 Kilogram etc….
PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF
DIMENSIONS
• Dimensional analysis is a fundamental aspect of measurement and is
applied in real-life physics. We make use of dimensional analysis for
three prominent reasons:
To check the consistency of a dimensional equation
To derive the relation between physical quantities in physical
phenomena
To change units from one system to another

APPLICATIONS OF
KINEMATICS
KINEMATICS
• What is kinematics?
Kinematics is the study of the motion of points, objects, and groups of objects
without considering the causes of its motion.
Kinematics is the branch of classical mechanics that describes the motion of
points, objects and systems of groups of objects, without reference to the causes
of motion (i.e., forces ). The study of kinematics is often referred to as the
“geometry of motion.”
PRACTICAL USE OF KINEMATICS
• Kinematics is used widely for practical purposes
In many instances it is only important to know how an object moves, without consideration
of the forces causing the motion.
For example, in machine components it is common to use kinematics analysis to determine
the (unknown) speed of an object, that is connected to another object moving at a known
speed.
For example, one may wish to determine the linear velocity of a piston connected to a
flywheel that is turning at a known speed. Such analysis commonly makes use of geometry,
such as trigonometry.
