Overview

• Introduction
• What is zero energy building
• Why zero energy building
• How to adopt zero energy building
• Advantages
• Disadvantages
• Conclusion
Introduction

• Increasing concerns about climate change and its impact on the environment

• Increasing global focus on sustainability :

“Ability of the present generation to meet their needs without compromising the

ability of future generations to meet theirs”.

• ZEB is not a single product or technology : but rather a combination of closely – integrated

evolving technologies.
What is zero energy building

• ZEB is defined as “amount of energy used is equal to the amount of renewable energy
created on the site”.
• A zero energy building is a building with zero energy consumption.
• Zero energy building is used to reduce carbon emissions and reduce dependence of fossil
fuels.
• These buildings consequently contribute less overall green house gas to the atmosphere than
similar non – zero energy buildings.
Why zero energy building
• To over come energy crisis
• Reduces energy consumption
• Reduces green house gases and global warming
• Reduces dependence on fossil fuels
• Protects our environment for future generations

How to adopt zero energy building

• Site selection and orientation
• Reduce heating , cooling and lighting loads through climate responsive design and
conservative practices
• Employ renewable or high efficiency energy sources
Sun as a renewable source of energy

Zero energy homes should be designed

to use solar energy as much as possible for

such things as: generating electricity,heating
hot water and utilizing passive solar space
heating.

Solar panel are placed on the roof top or

windows of the building, or anywhere where
maximum energy is received throughout the year.

The energy generated can be used for

cooking, heating, generating electricity etc..,
Wind as a renewable source of energy

In some extreme areas where wind energy is abundant and high, small windmills can also be used to
generate electricity for running small equipment.
Geothermal as renewable source of energy

The temperature of earth varies proportionally

with depth. We can utilize this temperature to
produce limit less energy.

One percent of the heat contained in just the

upper most 10 kms of the earths crust is equivalent
to 500 times the energy contained in all the earths

oil and gas resources.

Biogas as renewable source of energy

It is the most suitable energy resource as per environmental concern.

Suitable for rural areas where plenty of organic and inorganic wastes are available, no proper
discharging channel is not available.
Advantages
• Isolation for building owners from future energy price increases
• Reduce carbon emissions
• Reduce dependence of fossil fuels
• Increased comfort due to more-uniform interior temperatures
• Reduced total net monthly cost of living
• Higher resale value
• Improved reliability

Disadvantages
• Initial costs can be higher
• Lack of skills or experience to build ZEBs
Conclusion

• Solar and wind energy will be the major contributor of renewable energy for ZEB’s owing to
their widespread availability.
• Biogas can also be used for our energy needs .
• Geothermal energy is an upcoming form of energy having great potential to generate
electricity.
