AIR CONDITIONING
SYSTEMS
 Air conditioning (often referred to as AC) is
the process of removing heat and moisture
from the interior of an occupied space to
improve the comfort of occupants.
 A unitary or package air conditioning
system uses equipment where most or all of
the basic components have been assembled
in the factory e.g., room air conditioner
 A central or built-up air conditioning system
uses equipment centrally located in
mechanical equipment rooms. Each piece of
equipment is installed separately and
connected on the job, rather than
manufactured as a package.
 The goal is to keep more comfortable inside the house than outside.
 The control of these conditions may be desirable to maintain the health and comfort of
the occupants, or to meet the requirements of industrial processes irrespective of the
external climate conditions.
Central Air Conditioning Systems
Central air conditioning systems serve
Inside Outside multiple spaces from one base location.
These typically use chilled water as a
cooling medium and use extensive
ductwork for air distribution.
Unitary or Decentralized Air
Conditioning Systems
Decentralized air conditioning systems
commonly known as by various
generic names viz. local systems,
individual systems, unitary systems or
packaged systems provide cooling to
single room/spaces rather than the
building.
Types of AC Unit
There are six different types of air conditioners that are
each designed for a different space/reason.
1. Central Air Conditioners
2. Ductless, Mini-Split Air Conditioners
3. Window Units
4. Portable Units
5. Hybrid Air Conditioner
6. Geothermal Heating and Cooling
Central Air Conditioners
• A central air conditioner combines the evaporator,
condenser, and compressor in a single unit that is
placed on a roof or a concrete slab near the
foundation. From the unit, ducts running through the
exterior wall or roof draw air from inside the house
and return cooled air indoors.
• This type of air conditioner can also be combined
with a set of heating coils or a natural gas furnace
inside the building.
• The central air conditioning plants or the systems are
used when large buildings, hotels ,theaters, airports,
shopping, malls, etc. are to be air conditioned
completely.

Ductless, Mini-Split Air
Conditioners
• This is a good choice for houses that do not have
ductwork. The ductless, mini-split systems combine
an outdoor compressor and condenser with one or
more indoor air-handling units. These units are
mounted on the wall with blowers attached. Tubing
connects the indoor and outdoor units and circulates
refrigerant between them.
• Each room in your home will have a separate unit
that cools just that room, similar to a window unit.
These can be installed without tearing up walls, and
allow the temperature to be controlled independently
in each room. They can be more energy efficient,
but are more expensive if you’re cooling an entire
house.

Window Units
• These are the most common types of AC
units for single rooms. All of the
components are enclosed in a single box
with a single thermostat gauge that is fitted
in a slot made in the wall or window sill
where the unit sits.
• It is the simplest form of an air
conditioning system and is mounted
on windows or walls. ... It is a
single unit that is assembled in a casing
where all the components are located. This
refrigeration unit has a double shaft fan
motor with fans mounted on both sides of
the motor.

Portable Units
Portable air conditioners are great cooling
solutions for single rooms and can assist a
struggling central HVAC system. They're
commonly used in bedrooms, dens, computer
rooms, garages, and many other places. A
portable air conditioner is an air conditioner
that is mobile. Unlike window, through-the-
wall, or central air conditioning units, portable
units do not require permanent installation.
Commonly, these units have caster wheels for
easy portability, are relatively lightweight and
are generally about 28″ to 34″ tall.

Hybrid Air Conditioner

AC system contains standard
compressor, evaporator,
condenser and refrigerant. A solar
hybrid air conditioning system is
adapted for converting waste heat
energy into useful heat energy. ...

units is adapted to absorb the
waste heat energy from the
environment.

Geothermal Heating and Cooling
Geothermal heat pumps
(GHPs), also known as ground-
source heat pumps, can heat,
cool, and even supply hot
water to a home by transferring
heat to or from the ground.
This technology has been
keeping consumers
comfortable for more than 50
years and can cut energy bills
by up to 65% compared to
traditional HVAC units.
