ORIENTATION OF THE MATHEMATICS

TEXTBOOKS BASED ON SNC
OBJECTIVES OF SESSION-2:
QAED

At the end of the session-2, you will be able to:

 Identify the key features of the textbooks, e.g. learning outcomes, chapter organization,
illustrations, teaching points, etc.

 Discuss the concrete, pictorial and abstract (CPA) approach as underlying teaching
methodology
 Explore examples in the textbook that demonstrate CPA approach used for representation
of mathematical concepts in all the four strands
 Identify the Key features of different teaching strategies mentioned in the
mathematics SNC.
You will cover some of the unit content during your training through Microsoft team and rest
of the content, on your own, at LMS.
SESSION 2:ENERGIZER ACTIVITY

Take 2 minutes and write down

INTRODUCTION OF TEXTBOOKS: Orientation to the Textbooks-Preface
QAED

TEXTBOOKS-PREFACE:
Following are the key features of the textbooks of Mathematics which are covering four strands of
Mathematics Number and operations, Measurement and Geometry, Algebra and Data Handling
in each chapter, concept and topic.
1. Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract approach: Concepts are organizing with the help of real-life
examples along with attractive and eye-catching graphics to make it more effective and
interesting.

2. Support for teachers and learners in classroom: Eye-catching graphics, “Teaching points”
are provided with different skills and activities for the direction of teachers to teach lesson in an
interesting way. Concept introduction, nature of workout examples, nature of learning activities,
practice exercises, challenges (Try it).
CONCRETE, PICTORIAL AND ABSTRACT (CPA) APPROACH
QAED
Introduction: The Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) approach is a
system of learning that uses physical and visual aids to build a child's
understanding of abstract topics. Pupils are introduced to a new
mathematical concept using concrete resources (e.g. fruit, Dienes
blocks etc).

ATTRIBUTES OF GOOD TEACHER
QAED
Think of any of your mathematics teacher who was a Good teacher. Recall traits in the form of qualities and skills of
that teacher for which you consider him or her as a Good Teacher. Open your notebook and write at least 5 qualities
and skills of that teacher and match with table given below: -

Qualities Skills

Collaborate with other Teachers Critical thinking

Listen to Students Communication

Make Time for Each Student Organization
Learn Something New Every Day Imaginative thinking
Fill the Classroom with Positivity Leadership
Patiently Handle Challenging Teamwork
Situations
Constantly Look for Ways to Time management.

ROLE OF TEACHERS
QAED
Teachers are role-model for the students. Their actions convey more than their words. Students learn values from how
their teachers act rather than from what they say. Teacher makes a maximum impact on the personality of a student in
the formative years. This improved teaching practice could include the following aspects of a teacher’ s role:
Create an
effective class
opener

Conclude class Introduction of

TEACHING STRATEGIES AND DEMONSTRATION
QAED
• Mathematics is a science of numbers and space. It has its own language in term of signs, symbols and operations.
• It requires intuition, logic, reasoning and integrating various ideas and themes.
• The major strategies recommended for teaching Mathematics are as follow:

1.Demonst
ration
approach
6. Practical 2.Inquiry
work based
approach learning
8. Co- Teaching 9. Problem
operative Stratigies Solving
learning approach
5.
3. Brain

4. Math-

approach
ORIENTATION TO DEMONSTRATION APPROACH
QAED
• Demonstration approach is a strategy in which the teacher engages “in a learning task other than just talking about it”.
• A teacher’s role is to demonstrate mathematical concepts practically and invite questions, while the learners are
encouraged to observe, reflect and draw relevant inferences about the mathematical concept.
• Learners are also encouraged to demonstrate their understanding of mathematical concepts.
• Children should be able to share their learning through practical activity.

Group Activity:
Facilitator will distribute the participants into small
groups and ask them to practice demonstration on one
of exercise sum is given from SNC textbooks. One
representative from each group will presents it.
Question: There are 243 rows of apple trees each
containing 21 trees. How many apple trees are there?
