What is Science?

Science
Is the knowledge gained from using
observations and experiments to describe
and explain the world around us.

It is a systematic way of explaining a

wide range of phenomena in the simplest
possible manner.
Science from the Latin word Scientia
meaning knowledge or knowing.

Itis the effort to discover and increases

human understanding of how the physical
worlds works.

Aristotle:Human beings by nature desire to

know. They seek the truth. They explore the
environment to gain knowledge of the
underlying structure and composition of the
material world.
All scientists observe things, try to explain
their observations and then conduct
experiments to test their ideas.

This process is known as the Scientific

Method.

A knowledge or a system of knowledge

covering general truths or the operation of
general laws especially as obtained and tested
through scientific method.
What is the Goal of Science ?
The goal of science is to investigate, understand
and to explain events in the natural world and
also to use those explanations to make useful
predictions.

Scientists collect and organize information in a

careful, orderly way, looking for patterns and
connections between events.

Scientists propose explanations that can be

tested by examining evidence.
How is science done?
Science begins with an observation.

This is the process of gathering

information about events or processes in a
careful, orderly way.

Data is the information gathered from

making observations.
Two Types of Data:
Quantitative Data are numbers and
obtained by counting or measuring.
Quantitative → Quantity

Qualitative Data are descriptions and

involve characteristics that cannot be
counted.
Qualitative → Quality

Scientific Law
A law summarizes a natural occurrence
that may be consistently observed given
the same conditions. The law summarizes
what has been observed.

The laws imply a cause and effect

between the observed elements and must
always apply under the same conditions.
Hypothesis
Is a scientific explanation for a set of
observations.

It must be stated in a way that makes

it “testable”. The hypothesis is just a
possible answer to a question, and it
must be thoroughly tested.
