Outline
1.Linear
2.Circular
3.Spiral
At the end of the unit, the students must have:
1. differentiated the three models
2. constructed their own communication model.
Communication Process

The steps we take in order to achieve a

successful communication.
Communication Models

1.Linear
2.Circular
3.Spiral
1. Linear Model
•one-way communication
•sender transmits message and receiver absorbs it
•It is limited and has been superseded by:
two-way
transactional
mutual models

•suits one-way processes such as print and broadcast

advertising
Aristotle’s Model
Lasswell’s Model (Harold Lasswell)
Lasswell’s Model (Harold Lasswell)
•primarily designed to analyse mass communication
•applied to different media and new fields:
internet
social media
campaigning
•often used in communication sciences and public relations
•also applied to interpersonal and group communication
2. Circular Model
● also called Transactional Model
● communication is achieved as both participants
send and receive messages
● mostly used for interpersonal communication
● phone, email, letters, face to face
Shannon-Weaver Model
(Claude Elwood Shannon – Warren Weaver)
•Message is sent in codes through a medium
ex. telephone
Osgood-Schramm Model 1
(Charles Egerton Osgood-Wilbur Schramm)
•Encoding and decoding are not
automatic processes
•They go through the filter of the
interpreter
•The message may succeed or fail
•Depends on the interpreter’s
appreciation of the message
•Sometimes participants may apply
different meanings to the same message
(semantic noise)
Osgood-Schramm Model 2
● there must be a common field of
experience between sender and
receiver
● receiver might not fully appreciate
the message, if there are parts of
the sender’s experience that the
receiver has no knowledge of
● field of experience: culture, social
background, beliefs, experiences,
values, rules
White’s Stages of Communication
(Eugene White)
● Oral communication is a continuous
process
● It has no real beginning or end
● To be a good communicator:
○ pay attention to how people
respond to the message
(monitor)
○ adjust accordingly
○ don’t be preoccupied with
simply expressing oneself
3. Spiral Model (Frank Dance)
● Dance Model/Helix Model
● shows how dynamic communication is
● emphasizes the difficulties of
communication
● it is evolutionary
● the whole process takes some time to
reach
● it is largely dependent on its past.
ex. Communicators share only a small
portion of themselves in the beginning, it
gradually develops expanding its
boundaries to the next level
Activity
