How to find surface area,

volume
Abdullah Shahid
Learning to find surface are and volume
• Ever thought how people know the
volume of containers so they can put the
measurement in or how people get to
know the perfect amount of paint to use
on a wall before even starting to paint!
• Well the answer to the calculation of
both the surface area of a shape and it’s
volume and today we are going to learn
how to calculate these.
.

Starting with a cube

Way of finding volume
• Just like a square a cube has all sides equal that’s
why it is very easy to find the area of the cube
using the formula below.
• Volume of a cube= S^3
• So if you cube a side you get the volume because
all sides are same in a cube.
• An example could be a cube with a side
measuring 5cm so you cube 5 which is 125 so the
volume of your is 125cm^3.
. .

Cube
Now surface area
• Now surface area means the area of the uppermost
layer of a shape so in this case a cube is made out of
6 squares so we have to find the area of those 6
squares and add to get the surface area of that cube.
• Formula- surface area = 6S^2
• To find the area of one square the side so in a cube
square a side then multiply with 6 because there are
6 outer squares.
• Example could be cube with side 3cm so
• 6 x 3^2 6 x 6  12cm/ so surface are is 12 cm.
.

Lets learn about the cuboid

The volume
• This is the same story to the cube we have 3 measurement length,
breadth and hight but now they are different so in this case the
formula to be used below
• Formula volume = L x B x H
• Now we just multiply the L,B,H and get our volume of
the cuboid. .

• For example in one cuboid the l=2cm, h=4cm, b=2cm so

now simply multiply 2 x 4 x 2 and get volume which is 8
cm.
.

Cuboid

Now surface area

• This one is little more harder but still easy and here is
the formula below
• Formula  surface area=2(lw+lh+hw)
• Just do the calculations now to get the surface are
multiply the measurements add them then again
multiply by 2. 3cm

m
• Example could be a Cuboid with L=5cm, W=4cm, H=3cm So

4c
put the formula. 5cm
• 2x(5x4+5x3+3x4) 2x(20+15+12)  2x47 94 This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA

• So the surface area is 94cm.

Finally a Sphere
•  The volume
• The volume of a circle is only just based of the
formula below
• Formula= V= 4/3 r^3
• So just cube radius of a circle then multiply with
and then multiply with 4/3
• For example your radius is 2cm
• 4/3 x x 2^3  4/3 x 25.13274123  volume is
33.51cm^3

Sphere
•  Surface Area
• This is also easy just square your radius
multiply with pi then multiply with four.
• Formula Surface Area= 4
• Example could be your radius is 6cm so
• 6^2  36x  113.0973355x4= surface area
is 452.39cm

Individual Problems Packet

• There could be many uses of finding the surface area and volume of things
in the real life world one of them could be that how much water your dog
drinks in many different situations like after playing or after bathing what
could you use? Yes you have to get the volume to the dog’s sipping bowl
Individual Problems Packet

• Or it could be a hot day and you want to find the perfect

amount of paint that could cover all your house wall without
wasting paint so what do you do? Correct again, you have to
find the surface area of all your walls.
Individual Problems Packet

• Or again you are a company making science lab beakers and want to find
the perfect calculation for the amount to liquid capacity the beaker could
hold and I am sure you know that you again have to get the volume of the
beaker first to get the correct measurements for that special beaker.
Net project

• I have chosen a cube and a cuboid and that both have

real life examples as for a cuboid it could be a tissue
box and or the cube it could be a chair in the shape of
cube
Cuboid
• Using the Net you could definitely
find both the surface area and the
volume with ease just try to
picture the net in the shape of that
shape then do calculations and rest
all the formulas you already know.
• Volume = L x B x H
• Surface area = 2(lw+lh+hw)
Remade cuboid net into a shape

Cube
• Exact same concept from the
cuboid just try to picture the net in
the shape of that shape then do
calculations and rest all the
formulas you already know. Side = 5 cm

• Volume = S^3
• Surface Area = 6S^2
