Defining and calculating

PERIMETER &
AREA
When your family puts up a
new fencearound your home,
how will they know how
much fencing they need?

PERIMETER
Perimeter
• The perimeter of a figure is the distance
allthe way around the figure.
Perimeter
• The perimeter is found by adding the lengths of th
e
sid together.
es
Find the perimeter of the
A.figures. B.

P = 24 m
P = 21 cm

C. D.

P = 39 mm
P = 26 in.
Perimeter of a
Square
• A square is a figure with 4 equal sides.
• The perimeter can be found by adding
all 4 sides together.
• It can also be foundby multiplying the side
• length by 4. So the formula for the
perimeter of a square is:
P = 4s
Find the perimeter of the squares
using the formula P = 4s .
A. B.

P = 36 m P = 28 in.

C.
D.

P = 44 mm P = 20 cm
Perimeter of a
Rectangle
• A rectangle is a figure with 4 sides.
Opposite sides are equal.
• The perimeter can be found by adding
all 4 sides together.
• It can also be found by adding twice
the width together with twice the length.
• So the formula for the perimeter of a rectangle is:
P = 2w + 2l
Find the perimeter of the
rectangles using the formula P
A. = 2w + 2l. B.

P = 30 cm

C. P = 28 m

D.

P = 54 mm P = 28 in.
If your parents want to put
new carpet in your room, how
will they knowhow much
carpet to buy?

AREA
Area
• The area of a figureis the number of square
units that cover the surface of the closed
figure.
Area
• A square unit is a unit that has 4 equal
sides.

• For metric units, we say “units

squared”. Ex: centimeters squared or cm2
• For U.S. Customary, we say “square units” Ex: square inches or
sq. in.
Area
• The area of a figureis foundby finding how
many square units it takes to cover its
surface.
Find the area of the
A. figures.
B.

A = 16 sq. units
A = 27 sq. units
C.
D.

A = 30 sq. units A = 8 sq. units

Area of a
Square
• The area of a squareis foundby findinghow
many square units it takes to cover its
• surface.
It can also be foundby multiplying its side
length by its side length.
• – Multiplying a number by itself is also called “squaring it”.
So the formula for the area of a square
is: A = s x s
or A = s 2
Find the area of the squares
using the formula A =
A. s2. B.

A = 16 cm2 A = 25 sq. in.

C. D.

A = 49 m2 A = 81 sq. ft.
Area of a
Rectangle
• The area of a rectangle is found by
finding howmany square unitsit takes to
• cover its surface.
• It can also be foundby multiplying its length by
its width. So the formula for the
area of a rectangle is: A =l x
w
Find the area of the
rectangles using the
A. formula A = l x w.
B.

A = 24 cm2 A = 77 sq. in.

C.
D.

A = 140 mm2 A = 48 sq. ft.
