Types
 Addition: add or plus
 Subtraction: take away something from

something, reduce some amount from


particular amount
 Multiplication: when we multiply a number
 Division: divide something or break into parts
Addition
Example:
 12+13=25
 a+b=c

12, 13, a, b are called addend


C is called the sum
How to read?
 Twelve plus thirteen equals twenty five

or
 Twelve plus thirteen is equal to twenty five
Subtraction
Example:
8-3=5
8 is minuend
3 is subtrahend
5 is difference

Read:
 Eight minus three equals five

Or
 Eight subtracted by three is equal to five
Multiplication
Example:
 4 x 5=20

4 and 5 are factors,


4 is multiplicand, 5 is multiplier
20 is called product

Read:
 Four times five equals twenty
 Four multiplied by five equals twenty
Division
Example:
 30 : 6 = 5, 30/6 = 5

 7 : 3 = 2 remains 1

Read:
 Thirty divided by six equals five

7 is dividend
3 is divisor
2 is quotient
1 is remainder
