Opinions on Globalization
1. Globalization is not a monolithic force but an evolving set of
consequences - some good, some bad and some unintended. It is the
new reality. -John B. Larson
2. Globalization, as defined by rich people like us, is a very nice thing...
you are talking about the Internet, you are talking about cell phones, an
d you are talking about computers. This doesn't affect two-thirds of the
people of the world. -Jimmy Carter
3. Globalization means we have to re-examine some of our ideas, and l
ook at ideas from other countries, from other cultures, and open oursel
ves to them. And that's not comfortable for the average person. -Herbie
Hancock
Opinions on Globalization

4. The trends that are shaping the twenty-first-century

world embody both promise and peril. Globalization, for
example, has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of
poverty while contributing to social fragmentation and a
massive increase in inequality, not to mention serious
environmental damage.
-Klaus Schwab
5.It has been said that arguing against globalization is like
arguing against the laws of gravity. -Kofi Annan
Types of Globalization(David McDonald,2020)
Financial globalization

• Interconnection of the world’s financial systems

e.g. stock markets
• More of a connection between large cities than of
nations
Example: What happens in Asian markets affects the Nort
h American markets.
Types of Globalization(David McDonald,2020)
Economic Globalization

A worldwide economic system that permits easy

movement of goods, production, capital, and resources
(free trade facilitates this)
Example: NAFTA, EU, Multinational corporations
.
Types of Globalization(David McDonald,2020)
Technological Globalization

Connection between nations through technology such as

television, radio, telephones, internet, etc.
Was traditionally available only to the rich but is now far
more available to the poor. Much less infrastructure is
needed now.
.
Types of Globalization(David McDonald,2020)
Political Globalization

countries are attempting to adopt similar political policies

and styles of government in order to facilitate other forms
of globalization
e.g. move to secular governments, free trade agreements,
etc
.
Types of Globalization(David McDonald,2020)
Cultural Globalization

Merging or “watering down” of the world’s cultures e.g.

food, entertainment, language, etc.
Heavily criticized as destructive of local culture
e.g. The Simpsons is shown in over 200 countries in the
world.
.
Types of Globalization(David McDonald,2020)
Ecological Globalization

seeing the Earth as a single ecosystem rather than a collect

ion of separate ecological systems because so many
problems are global in nature
e.g. International treaties to deal with environmental issues
like biodiversity, climate change or the ozone layer, wildlife
reserves that span several countries

Globalization, Technology & Communication

• There can be no connectedness in the global world without com

munication and this is what Mathhews and Thakkar (2012)
consider as the challenge in the society.
• There is a need to manage communication very carefully
including those that involve privacy, security and ethical standards
( Ingram, 2000).
• Man is in control when he allows himself to be guided by the real
ity of the separation of the virtual from the real world which can
be achieved by the management of communication.
• Technology is the driving force of globalization.
Problems Of The Use Of Technology On
Communication And Human Relation.
• Allowing technology take us places we don’t want to go
• Reclaiming Real Conversation: distinguishing mere connection
to conversation
• Increasing relationship with technology without proper
management
• Losing the very nature of man, his value, his essence
Gordon Brown’s suggestion:

let us make use of our capacity to communicate

directly across the globe in order to find comm
on ground with people we don’t personally meet
so that we can take collective action together to
deal with global problems and concerns and star
t the creation of a real global society.
