Teaching Intership

TEAM 3
Managing my classroom
structure/routines.
• Classroom routines and procedures are essential for a
successful classroom. They help your classroom run
efficiently so you can maximize student learning.

• Routines are a NECESSITY. They need to be carefully

planned in advance and broken down into clear, specific
steps that students can follow. You will need to explicitly
model these procedures to your students and give them
ample opportunities to practice.

Reporter: ANA ERICA AGTARAP

• Take time to VISUALIZE your ideal school day. It is
very important to visualize how you want things to go so
you can design the routines you need to make that
happen.

• Write the steps down and REHEARSE. Write each step

down.Teaching is one big experiment! We all make lots
of mistakes, but it is how we respond to those mistakes
that sets us up for success. Just write good notes, revise,
and improve the procedure for the next day.

Reporter: ANA ERICA AGTARAP

• Refer to your Written Procedures. Elementary teachers need a
lot of procedures. There is no way you will be able to remember
every little detail of your plan with so many other things
swirling through your mind. Keep your written procedures with
you. Refer to them when you are teaching them. Make notes if
you need to make revisions.

• Accept that this is an INVESTMENT of your time. Procedures

take time to learn and perfect. Every moment that you spend
teaching, modeling, and practicing procedures with your class is
time invested.

• Routines – These are the backbone of daily classroom
life. They facilitate teaching and learning. Routines do
not just make your life easier, they save valuable
classroom time. What’s more important is efficient.

• Routines make it easier for students to learn and achieve

more. When routines and procedures are carefully taught,
modeled and established in the classroom, children know
what is expected of them and how to do certain things on
their own. Having these predictable patterns in place
allows teachers to spend more time in meaningful
instruction.

A. What routines do I need to establish in order to make
a better classroom?

B. Interview other teachers and inquire on what

classroom routines they have established to ensure better
classroom management.

C. Surf the internet or research in the library. Read and

jot down some important notes on classroom routines and
procedures.

CLASSROOM ROUTINES AND PROCEDURE

Established clear classroom routines and

procedures is necessary for ensuring that your
classroom runs smoothly.

Reporter: JOCELYN CONTRERAS

This process can nurture a sense of ownership
and community in your classroom. In
establishing procedures or routines, it is
important to:

•Ensure that students understand the reason for

the routine.
•Clarify the procedure through modeling.

Reporter: JOCELYN CONTRERAS

•Allow students opportunities to practice the
routine through rehearsal.

•Try not to overwhelm students by teaching too

many routines at once. The process of establishing
routines and procedures may take several days.

•Remember that it will probably be necessary to

revisit this process as you see the need.

Reporter: COLLIN NICOLE SEGUNDO

The following list may help you get started in thinking about times
during the day for which you may want to establish procedures and
routines:

•Beginning the day

•Entering and exiting the classroom
•Labeling papers
•Collection and distribution of papers
•Signaling for quiet and attention
•Appropriate times for moving around the room

Reporter: COLLIN NICOLE SEGUNDO

•Emergency drills and procedures
•Going to the restroom
•Moving throughout the school
•Late arrival
•Grading and homework policies (including make-
up work)
•Asking questions
•Finishing an assignment early
•Dismissal

management.

•It enables the learners to predict what will happen to the

next day and he will able to prepare for it.

•It enables the learner to establish a habit every time he
arrives at the school.

•It establishes harmonic rapport between the student and

teachers.

•It establishes a feeling of responsibility to the students.
