Crush Culture

by Conan
Gray Analysis
By Emm Wright
The video
Why I decided to analyse this music
video

- It is an indie pop song

- The video is set in a high school like our idea

- I liked the colour scheme

- The concept of the song came through successfully in the

video which is what we want to achieve

- Negative view on adolescent life like our song

- I like Conan Gray as a star

Notes I wrote for
the narrative
- Anti ‘crush culture’

- Conan is constantly interrupting intimate

moments and dates

- Comedic

- Done in a f unny, colour ful way but the

true meaning of the song is much deeper
Meaning
The term crush culture is the consensus
that we must always be in a relationship.
This is a toxic and unhealthy view for
adolescents and the song basically shows
that the whole concept of crush culture is
‘ s t u p i d ’, a n d i t s h o u l d n ’ t h a v e t o w o r r y
us. The picture the the left shows the
notes I made about the meaning while
watching the video.
Lyrics
These lyrics clearly show what the song is
about, and explains Conan’s thoughts
towards the modern day consensus that is
crush culture
Conan Gray’s Star
Reputation

He is approachable and relatable making

him more appealing to adolescents.
Teens who have never been in a relation
or had their fi rst kiss may feel incredibly
self conscious about it, but having an
idol like Conan Gray, they hopefully will
be more at peace with themselves.
Target Audiences

- Teenagers

- Adolescents

- Young adults

- People who like pop and indie

- Single people
Colour
Scheme
To t h e r i g h t y o u c a n s e e t h e b r i e f
notes on the colour scheme I
made. I think the colour scheme
that was chosen suited the song
and video a lot. What I mean is
t h a t t h e c o l o u r s w o r ke d w e l l
together as well as signifying the
d i ff e r e n t e m o t i o n s C o n a n G ra y i s
trying to project to the audience.
Mis-En-Scene
In the previous slide I discussed the colour
scheme already. The outfi ts are general high
school out fi ts to properly create the high
school vibe along with the set and location.
T he props being broken convey the hate
Conan Gray feels towards ‘crush culture’. Body
language and facial expressions signify
‘hatred’ and anger well
Editing
The editing is fairly
simple, going from
per formance to narrative
of ten. We also see the
happy couple as they are
before Conan comes in to
ruin their moments.
Camera
Angles
Camera angles were
relatively simple, they
tell the stor y well. Use of
close ups on the things
Conan breaks as well as
wide shots to show the
scene eff ectively.
