Aruna Roy
• Born 26 June 1946
• Postgraduate degree in English literature from Indraprastha College,
Delhi University
• Roy taught for a year at the same college before entering the civil service 04
in 1968 as an officer in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS)
• She left the IAS in 1974 to join the Social Work and Research Centre, a
rural-development organization in Tilonia in Rajasthan state
• In 1990 she moved to Devdungri, also in Rajasthan, and set up the
Workers and Peasants Strength Union (Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan;
MKSS)

• She has been in the forefront of many sociopolitical struggles of the poor and oppressed.
• She also voices her concerns about the recent increase in intolerance in the country.
• Her leadership and participation in the campaigns for the enactment of laws relating to the
right to information, the right to work (the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment 05
Guarantee Act, or MGNREGA) and the right to food are noteworthy
• As a member of the Pension Parishad, she has been involved with the campaign for a
universal, non-contributory pension for workers of the unorganised sector
• As part of the National Campaign for People’s Right to Information (NCPRI),
• she was vocal in her demand for the passage of the Whistle Blowers Protection Act and the
Grievance Redressal Act.
Medha Patkar
• Born 1 December 1954
• She was a Ph.D. scholar at TISS, studying Economics development
and its impact on traditional societies

• After working up to M.Phil level she left her unfinished Ph.D. when
she became immersed in her work with the tribal and peasant
communities in the Narmada valley spread over three states.
• Medha did not participate as an active politician, but she did so by
creating an atmosphere and environment by organizing a fifteen-day
Maharashtra state-level campaign.
• In January 2014, Medha Patkar joined the Aam Aadmi Party, a
political party led by Arvind Kejriwal.

• Bedi became the first Indian and first woman to be appointed as head of
the United Nations Police and Police Advisor in the United Nations
