Pulley used in conveyor belt

Pulley used in conveyor system

Why pulley used ?

• Pulleys are used on conveyor to support and deflect the belting

through conveyor structure.
• Pulleys also provide a mechanism whereby the conveyor belt can
be trained to run through the conveyor idler.
• Generally, pulleys are located at the ends of the conveyor
structure and at the take-up arrangement.
Head pulley

• It is provided at head end or discharge end of the material.

• It usually drives the conveyor and often has a larger diameter than
other pulleys.
• For better traction, the head pulley is usually lagged (with either
rubber or ceramic lagging material).
Head pulley
Snub pulley

• It is used to increase the arc of contact of the belt near head

pulley.
• Which prevent the slipping of the conveyor belt and increase belt
traction.
• Provides angle of wrap becomes more than 180.
• Due to increase in angle of wrap increase in tension of belt.
Snub pulley
Bend pulley

• It is used to change the direction of belt in return side at terminal

points and provide wrap to the belt in take up pulley.
Tail and wing pulleys

• The tail pulley is located at the loading end of the belt.

• It comes with either a flat face or a slatted profile (wing pulley),
which cleans the belt by allowing material to fall between the
support members.
• It is usually an idler pulley but may be a drive pulley.

Take-up pulley

• A take-up pulley is used to provide the belt with the proper

amount of tension. Its position is adjustable.

Face width of pulley

• F=W+(2×Edge clearance)
• Edge clearance for different size of belt
• Up to 650mm width of belt edge clearance -50mm
• Up to 800mm to 1000mm width of belt edge clearance -75mm
• More than 1000mm width of belt edge clearance -100mm

Material of pulley

• The pulley may be made from material as per for steel tubes.
• Structural steel
• Grey iron castings
• Mild steel
Types of pulley

• Pulley shall be following types

• Type A
• Type B
• Type C
Type A

• Driving pulley and pulley exposed to high belt tension for example
main driving pulleys on the head and tail pulley un full tension
loop pulley in the tripper and tail pulley of the regenerative
conveyors.
• This type of pulley must be stress relived if it is fabricated by
welding.
Type B

• Pulley in the return run under lower belt tension for example tail
pulley in the case of head driving and take up and bend pulley in
take up devices.
Type C

•  Pulley having belt contact up to 30 like snub pulley.
