History of Puppetry in the Philippines
Puppetry in the Philippines started since the time of Dr. Jose Rizal, our national
hero, when he staged the play entitled  “CARILLO” or shadow puppetry. Rizal
used a carton and a stick and he placed this at the back of a white cloth.  Then
he used a candle light at the back of the puppets.
In the town of Angono, the giant puppets are well known. These are made of
Paper Mache and bamboo sticks. They are using these in celebrating the feast of
St. Clementine every last Sunday of November.
Aside from the traditional puppetry, there were puppet groups formed since
1972 up to present. These groups were inspired by the different puppetry art in
other countries and those children programs seen on the movies and television.

magic behind the puppetry art.

SHADOW
PLAY
What is Shadow Play?
Shadow play, also known as shadow puppetry, is an
ancient form of storytelling and entertainment which
uses flat articulated cut-out figures (shadow puppets)
which are held between a source of light and a
translucent screen or scrim. The cut-out shapes of the
puppets sometimes include translucent color or other
types of detailing. Various effects can be achieved by
moving both the puppets and the light source. A
talented puppeteer can make the figures appear to
walk, dance, fight, nod and laugh.

 piece played by a single
actor or singer, usually

Street play
Street theatre is a form ofand presentation in outdoor
public spaces  theatrical performance without a specific
paying audience. These spaces can be anywhere, including
shopping centres, car parks, recreational reserves, college
or university campus and street corners. They are
especially seen in outdoor spaces where there are large
numbers of people. The actors who perform street theatre
range from buskers to organised theatre companies or
groups that want to experiment with performance spaces,
or to promote their mainstream work.
Street Play
Sometimes known as ‘playing out sessions’ or ‘play streets’
— Street Play is a simple, effective and low-cost way for
children to be able to play out in the streets where they
live. Local authorities can use their existing powers under
road traffic legislation to allow temporary street closures at
regular weekly or monthly intervals, typically for three
hours at a time. Local parents and other residents act as
marshals, allowing their neighbours to drive to and from
their homes at walking pace, while through traffic is re-
directed. The result is usually a significant increase in
children playing out and making friends on their street. In
turn, adult neighbours get to know each other and
community spirit grows.
