INTRODUCTION
• Vermicomposting can be defined as a
process in which earthworms are used
to convert biodegradable solid waste
into vermicompost
• Vermicomposting is the best solution
to reduce the biodegdable solid waste.
• In this process the earthworms have
the key role and are the main
character.
• Vermicomposting is considered as the best choice for agronomic
activities.
• To solve the problems of waste disposal vermicomposting on a large
scale is required.
• All human habitations produce huge quantity of solid waste range
from domestic to agriculture and industries.
• By the process of vermicomposting 10-15% more crops yield
• Vermicomposting is a suitable biofertilizer regenerated from organic
waste using earthworms which contain 1.2 to 6.1 % more nitrogen,
1.82 to 2.0 % more phosphate and 0.5 to 0.7 % more potassium
compared to farm yards.
EARTHWORM SPECIES FOR
VERMICOMPOSTING
• Earthworm are called the intestines of the earth.
• Common earthworm species are :-
1. Eisenia foetida
2. Eudrilus eugeniae
3. Perionyx excavatus
• Each earthworm has body weight 0.4 to
0.6 g.
• On the basis of habitat feeding and casting :-
a) Habitat – The earthworms creates tunnels like projections through
the soil during their movement. They live in burrows ranging from
3-12 mm in diameter. During dry days they go deep beneath the
earth.
b) Feeding – Mainly feeds upon dead and decaying organic matter, also
feeds on leaf and leaf litter.
c) Casting – The concentrated mass secreted by the earthworms called
as cast. Some of the earthworms secretes castings in their habitata
(within burrows) while some cast on the surface.
Vermicomposting can be done by following
methods :-
• In pits
• In concrete tanks
• Bed method (ground or cement floor)
• Ring of wells
• In wooden or plastic crates
METHODOLOGY
• Following materials were utilised :-
1. Geosynthetic bags
2. Soil
3. Earthworms
4. Wastes
Benefits of vermicomposting
• Enhance the soil condition
• Improves soil aeration
• Improves water retention capacity of soil
• It helps the availability of nutrients to plants
CONCLUSION
• Vermicomposting is a substantial way of reducing waste.
• Producing natural fertilisers
• Maintiaining the balance of ecological environment
• It increases crop yield
• It is efficient method to reduce biodegradable solid wastes
