AGROFORESTRY SILVICULTURE AND

HARVESTING

Monday 1:00 – 6:00 PM (BSAF 3A)

Wednesday 1:00-6:00 PM (BSAF 3B)
INTRODUCTION

• What is Silviculture?
•
• -is defined as an art of producing and
tending a forest
•
• -known as the theories and practices of
controlling a forest establishment,
composition and growth.
Definition of Terms
FOREST

 Land with an area of more than 0.5 ha and tree

crown cover of more than 10%.
 The trees should be able to reach a minimum
height of 5 m at maturity in situ.
 It consists either of closed forest formations
where trees of various storeys and undergrowth
cover a high proportion of the ground or open
formations with a continuous vegetation cover in
which tree crown cover exceeds 10%.
Young natural stands and all plantations
established for forestry purposes, which have yet
to reach a crown density of more than 10% or tree
height of 5 m are included under forest.
GROWTH

 Irreversible increase in size (i.e. height

and diameter).
ESTABLISHMENT

 Successful growth of young plants

brought about by them with the right site
and favorable conditions.
STAND

 An aggregate of
trees occupying a
specific area and
sufficiently uniform
in composition
(species), age,
spacing and
condition as can be
distinguishable from
the natural forest.
SITE (3)

 An area considered in
terms of its
environment,
particularly as this
determines the type
and quality of the
vegetation the area
can carry (Clutter et
al., 1983).

 Geographic location
or environmental
condition (biotic,
edaphic, and climatic)
SITE QUALITY

 The timber production potential of a site for a

particular species or forest type.

 “good” (high productive potential); “poor” (low

potential).
What is Silviculture?

The act of producing and tending a

forest.

The theory and practice of controlling

forest establishments, composition and
growth.
Trends and Development in Agroforestry

 By the year 2020, world population was

estimated to reach a staggering 8 billion.
 FAO has projected global consumption
of tropical logs to increase from ___
million m3 in 20___ to ___ million m3 in
20___ an increase of over __ %.
 The same projection pointed out that
consumption will exceed production by
___ million m3 by the end of 20___.
Trends and Development in Agroforestry

 Consumption of sawn timber from the

tropics was likewise expected to increase
from __ million m3 to more than __
million m3 over the same period of time.
 Similar increases were projected to
occur in other timber products from the
tropics like veneers and plywood.
 A phenomenal increase in demand is
expected in wood pulp, paper and paper
products.
Assignment 1 and Activity 1
Trends and Development in Agroforestry

How will this discrepancies between supply

and demand be met in the future?

By and large, wood materials produced

from our forests will not be sufficient to
meet local and export demands in the not
too distant future.
Field Visit Guide

Area for field visit:

1. Find a forest area near by your residence.

2. Visit AF Complex
Field Visit Guide

Objectives:

1. Identify and classify the development as to forest and stand in the

two different sites;
2. Describe the development in terms of tree species, spatial,
production input used;
3. Analyze the strength and weaknesses (including opportunities) in
terms of productivity and sustainability;
4. Recommend or suggest possible strategies to address/ mitigate the
weaknesses, constraints or limitations, and how to take advantage
of the potential opportunities;
5. Discuss the potential application (replicability) of the development
to respective areas
Field Visit Guide

Methodology:

1. Document the different systems through any of the

following tools and techniques or their combinations
(whichever is/ are appropriate):

Direct observation
Interview
Spot mapping
Transect mapping/ Reconnaissance walk
Timeline/ Historical profile
Seasonal calendar
Others
Field Visit Guide

Methodology:

2. Analyze the strength, weaknesses and

opportunities and suggest strategies to
address the weaknesses/ constraints and
to take advantage of the existing
opportunities.
3. Determine the replicability of the
development documented..
4.Share findings and recommendations
during the reflection session.
Field Visit Guide

Methodology:

5. The following procedures will be undertaken to facilitate

the activities mentioned above:
• The students will be formed into two (2) groups.
• Each group will have its own documentation (it is up to
the group’s ingenuity on how to effectively facilitate the
documentation)
• After the field visit, each group met and prepared their
documentation (including its findings and
recommendations), which will be presented during the
reflection session.
• Each group will be required to submit written report on
this exercise.
