CLIMATE CHANGE IN

AGRICULTURE
THE IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE IN KENYA’S
AGRICULTURE
CLIMATE CHANGE
• Is a long term change in the average weather patterns that have
come to define earths local, regional and global climates.
• The global climate has always shown fluctuations and tremendous
drifts.
• Climate change causes adverse effects to plants and animals.
• The world is undergoing a catastrophic climate change and is hotter
than it has been in decade of years ago.
CAUSES OF CLIMATE CHANGE IN
KENYA.
• Deforestation
• Ranching
• Industrialisation
• Mining
HOW DEFORESTATION LEADS TO
CLIMATE CHANGE
• When trees are cut down and burned or allowed to rot, their stored
carbon is released into the air as carbon dioxide leading to
accumulation of green house gases and hence change in climate.
HOW RANCHING LEADS TO
CLIMATE CHANGE
• Livestock are responsible for 14.5 percent of global green
house gases.
• There is increased rumination and release of methane gas
which brings about climate change.
HOW INDUSTRIALISATION CAUSES
CLIMATE CHANGE
• This is done in factories, mining sites and transportation. They emit
a lot of green house gases into the atmosphere contributing to drift
in climate.
EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE
• Higher temperatures of about 28-30 degrees celcious
causing oxidative stress to animals.
• Incredible incidence of drought.
• Unpredictable rainfall patterns.
• Incredible incidence of animal disorders such as immune
suppression causing infections and death.
HAZARDOUS EFFECT OF CLIMATE
CHANGE IN ANIMALS
• The direct effect of climate change are due primarily to
increased temperatures, frequency and intensity of heat
waves. This starves larger percentage of cattle hence
massive death of animals.
WAYS OF CONTROLLING CLIMATE
CHANGE
• Kenya has implemented climate smart agriculture sector
framework which is strictly working towards regulating the
gas emissions.
• Installation of renewable sources of energy such as solar
panels and biogas plants.
• Afforestation
• Regulation of livestock stocking rate.
• Use organic farming and avoid emission of toxic gases into
the atmosphere.
MODERN RENEWABLE SOURCE OF
ENERGY
• Solar panels are being installed in some farms as an alternative for
non-renewable
energy sources.
CONCLUSION
• Due to the fact that most of the human activities leads to climate
change,we should switch to sustainable agriculture and employ the use of
renewable energy sources. With joint efforts towards this, climate change
will be settled globally.
