Classification of oral mucous membrane
• 1-Epithelium
• 2-Connective tissue
• (lamina propria )
• 3-Basement membrane.
•-Hard Palat
-It is keratinized masticatory mucosa.
Macroanatomy of palate

Soft palate
Uvula Ah-line
• 1-Palatine gingiva.
• - It is the area adjacent directly to the teeth.
• is similar to the gingiva but mucogingival junction not present.
• No submucosa
• 2-Median palatine raphe.
• - Extends from the palatine papilla posteriorly.
• - Palatine papilla (incisive) is pear shaped and is formed of dense C.T. that contains the oral
part of the naso-palatine duct .
• - There is no submucosa.
• 3-The antrolateral area. (fatty zone)
• - Between the raphe and the gingiva anteriorly.
• - Its lamina propria is fixed to the periosteum by bands of fibrous C.T. dividi
ng the submucosa into compartments containing
• fat cells.
-The fatty zone acts as a cushion.
• 4-The postero-lateral area (glandular zone).
• - Present posterior to the fatty zone.
• - The submucosa contains pure mucous glands.
Histology of hard palate
