VALUE OF A COVER LETTER!!!!

• The value of a cover letter is splendid

because it explains details on your resume
in more depth and is the first impression a

cover letters to narrow down the applicant
pool and choose the group of candidates
they want to interview. While some jobs
require a cover letter and others make it
optional, to see which applicants will put
in the extra effort.

HOW IMPORTANT IS A COVER LETTER??

• A cover letter is more than just a

formality or courtesy – it is an
opportunity to impress. Research
suggests that employers favor resumes
that are accompanied by a cover letter,
making it a critical component of your
job-search strategy. A well-written cover
letter is an opportunity to show the
reader your:
IMMEDIATE VALUE!!
• First impressions count. A concise and
compelling cover letter is your first
chance to stand out and be considered
a strong candidate amongst tough
competition. Immediately emphasizing
your key strengths will help ‘sell you,’
grabbing the reader’s attention and
increasing the likelihood of progression
through the selection process.
UNIQUE FIT!!

• A cover letter is an important way to

showcase how your unique
combination of skills and experience
meet the key requirements of the
job description. It is your chance to
show a clear link between your
knowledge, experience and abilities
and the needs of the employer.

PERSONALITY!!

letter gives the employer an important
insight into your personality and the
kind of traits that could add value to
their team. It allows you to explain in
your own words why you are the best
person for the job.
ENTHUSISAM!!!!

• A tailored, compelling cover letter

shows you have taken the time to
research the company and
understand the employer’s needs
and job requirements. It is an
opportunity to express that you are
enthusiastic about the role and to
demonstrate the value you would
add to the employer.

HOW TO WRITE A GENERAL COVER LETTER

o A typical cover letter is one

page long and gives a brief
description of your
professional background and
why you are qualified for the
job. An effective cover letter
for all purposes should include
these elements:
1. BEGIN WITH A PROFESSIONAL HEADING!!

o Start the letter with your

contact information, the
date and the recipient’s
contact information.
Include your mailing
address, email address and
phone number including
area or country code. You
might include a link to your
online professional profile.
2. OPEN WITH SALUTATION!!
o Find the name of the hiring manager or
recruiter if you can, and address your cover
letter to that person. Even if the letter is
generic, addressing it to a specific person
indicates attention to detail and
consideration. Begin with a formal
salutation, such as “Dear Mr. Cortez.” If the
direct recipient is unknown, you can use
“Dear Hiring Manager” or “To Whom It May
Concern.”
3.SUMMARIZE YOUR CAREER

o The majority of your cover letter

should state your achievements and
experience. Include information
about the skills you have gained on
the job as well as major
accomplishments. In two or three
paragraphs, expand on the
information in your resume and
include specific examples.
4. HIGHLIGHTS YOUR QUALITIES!!!

o Talk about why you are right

for the job instead of why you
want the job. If you are
changing careers, briefly
explain why. Discuss your
motivation and willingness to
work, and highlight skills that
relate to the new position.
5. CLOSE WITH A THANK YOU!!

o Thank the hiring manager for

their time and use the closing
as an opportunity to sum up
why they should hire you. You
could also express your interest
in the next steps of the hiring
process. Include your printed
name and signature.
