Solving Different kinds of Proportion

Recite: Count by (skip) 2 3 , 4 , 6 and
7
Important Notes

Proportion is a mathematical comparison

between two numbers.
Basic proportions are of two types: direct
proportions and inverse proportions.
We can apply the concepts of proportions
to geography, comparing quantities in
physics, dietetics, cooking, etc.
Solving Different kinds of Proportion

Types of Proportions
Based on the type of relationship two or more quantities
share, the proportion can be classified into different
types. There are two types of proportions.

Direct Proportion
Inverse Proportion
Direct Proportion

Example: There were 24 females who participated in an out

reached activity. If the ratio of the females who participated in the
outreach activity was 8:5, how many males were there?
Proportion: 24 8
__ =___
N 5
Solution: 24 x 5 =120 Nx8
120 ÷8 =N
= 15
Answer: There were 15 males who participated in the
outreach activity.
Inderect Proportion

Ex:
If 10 men can finish painting a house in 4 days, how many
men can finish the same work

Given: time:
10 men 4 days or 10 2
N 2 days __ = ___
N 4
Solution:
10 x 4 = 40 Nx2
40 ÷ 2 = N
N= 20
Answer: 20 People are needed to finish the task in 2
days.
1: An electric pole, 7 meters high, casts a shadow of
5 meters. Find the height of a tree that casts a
shadow of 10 meters under similar conditions.

2: A train travels 200 km in 5 hours. How much time

it will take to cover 600 km?

3: The scale of a map is given as 1:20000000. Two

cities are 4cm apart on the map. Find the actual
distance between them.
