TYPES OF PROPORTION

Objectives:

1.To identify the different types of

proportions.

2.To solve problems involving ratio

and proportion.
GEAR UP!
Solve for the missing term in each of the
following proportion.
PROPORTION ANSWER
𝑄 3 𝟏𝟓
= 𝟕
5 7
𝑄: 12 = 4: 𝑄 𝟒 𝟑
3: 18 = 5: 6 𝟏𝟓
5 𝑅 𝟏𝟎
=
7 14
3: 𝑅 = 6: 10 𝟓
Types of Proportion
1. Direct Proportion
 exist between two quantities when they are related in
such a way that one quantity will produce the same kind
of change in the other quantity. The ratio is constant.

2. Inverse Proportion
 exist between two quantities when they are related in
such a way that quantity will produce an opposite kind
of change. The product is constant.

3. Partitive Proportion
 a whole divided into parts proportional to a given
ratio.
Direct Proportion
- exist between two quantities when they are related in
such a way that one quantity will produce the same kind
of change in the other quantity.
𝑿𝟏 𝑿𝟐
The ratio is constant. =
𝒀𝟏 𝒀𝟐
Example
1. If 12 gallons of gasoline cost Php540, how much
will 15 gallons of gasoline cost?

Given: Solution:
Therefore, 15 gallons of
𝑿𝟏 = 𝟏𝟐 𝟏𝟐 𝟏𝟓
= gasoline will cost Php675.
𝒀𝟏 = 𝟓𝟒𝟎 𝟓𝟒𝟎 𝒀𝟐
𝑿𝟐 = 𝟏𝟓 𝟏𝟐𝒀𝟐 = 𝟓𝟒𝟎(𝟏𝟓)
𝒀𝟐 =? 𝟏𝟐𝒀𝟐 𝟖𝟏𝟎𝟎
=
𝟏𝟐 𝟏𝟐
𝒀𝟐 = 𝟔𝟕𝟓
Direct Proportion
- exist between two quantities when they are related in
such a way that one quantity will produce the same kind
of change in the other quantity.
𝑿𝟏 𝑿𝟐
The ratio is constant. =
𝒀𝟏 𝒀𝟐

Example

2. A baker uses a ratio of 1 egg for every 4 cups of

flour in a certain recipe. If he uses a dozen of
eggs, how many cups of flour will he need?
Given: Solution:
𝑿𝟏 = 𝟏; 𝒀𝟏 = 𝟒 𝟏 𝟏𝟐
=
𝑿𝟐 = 𝟏𝟐; 𝒀𝟐 =? 𝟒 𝒀𝟐
𝒀𝟐 = 𝟒(𝟏𝟐)
𝒀𝟐 = 𝟒𝟖
Therefore, a baker needs 48 cups of
flour.
Inverse Proportion
- exist between two quantities when they are related
in such a way that one quantity will produce an
opposite kind of change in the other quantity.
The product is constant.
𝑿𝟏 𝒀𝟏 = 𝑿𝟐 𝒀𝟐
Example
1.In 30 minutes, 2 men can transport 200 books
from one building to another building. How
long will 8 men do the same job?
Given: Solution:
𝑿𝟏 = 𝟐; 𝒀𝟏 = 𝟑𝟎 𝟐(𝟑𝟎) = 𝟖𝒀𝟐 𝑻𝒉𝒖𝒔, 𝟖 𝒎𝒆𝒏 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕
𝑿𝟐 = 𝟖; 𝒀𝟐 =? 𝟔𝟎 = 𝟖𝒀𝟐 𝟐𝟎𝟎 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝟕. 𝟓 𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒕𝒆𝒔
𝟔𝟎 𝟖𝒀𝟐
=
𝟖 𝟖
𝒀𝟐 = 𝟕. 𝟓
Inverse Proportion
- exist between two quantities when they are related
in such a way that one quantity will produce an
opposite kind of change in the other quantity.
The product is constant.
𝑿𝟏 𝒀𝟏 = 𝑿𝟐 𝒀𝟐
Example
2. It takes 8 days for 35 laborers to harvest
coffee on a plantation. How long will 20
laborers take to harvest coffee on the same
plantation?
Given: Solution:
𝑿𝟏 = 𝟑𝟓; 𝒀𝟏 = 𝟖 𝟑𝟓(𝟖) = 𝟐𝟎𝒀𝟐 𝑻𝒉𝒖𝒔, 𝟐𝟎 𝒍𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒄𝒂𝒏
𝑿𝟐 = 𝟐𝟎; 𝒀𝟐 =? 𝟐𝟖𝟎 = 𝟐𝟎𝒀𝟐 𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒄𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝟏𝟒 𝒅𝒂𝒚𝒔
𝟐𝟖𝟎 𝟐𝟎𝒀𝟐
=
𝟐𝟎 𝟐𝟎
𝒀𝟐 = 𝟏𝟒
Partitive Proportion
- a whole divided into parts proportional to a
given ratio.

Steps to follow:
1. Identify the given.
2. Formulate the equation.
3. Substitute the given values in the question.
4. Solve and check the equation.

Example
1.Mrs. De Luna divided the amount of Php120,000
between her two daughters, in the ratio of
5:7. How much did each one of them receive?
𝟓 + 𝟕 = 𝟏𝟐

𝟓

2. Three brothers inherited a cash amount of
Php240,000 and they divided it among
themselves at the ratio of 5:2:1. How much
more largest share than the smallest share?
𝟓+𝟐+𝟏=𝟖 𝟓
𝟓 = 𝐗 𝟐𝟒𝟎, 𝟎𝟎𝟎 = 𝐏𝐡𝐩𝟏𝟓𝟎, 𝟎𝟎𝟎
1st brother = 𝒐𝒇 𝑷𝒉𝒑𝟐𝟒𝟎, 𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝟖 𝐏𝐡𝐩𝟏𝟓𝟎, 𝟎𝟎𝟎
