Types of Proportion
Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:

1. Compare and differentiate ratio and rate

2. Write proportions illustrating real-life situations
3. Solve problems involving ratio and proportion
Essential Question
How would you differentiate direct, inverse and
partitive proportion from one another?

What are the uses of these types of proportions

in business?
Types of Proportion

DIRECT

INVERSE

PARTITIVE
How is the concept of ratio can be used in business
Identify the relationship exists in each situation either direct,
inverse or partitive.
1. In baking pandesal, 2 cups of flour is to 1 egg and when
increased, 4 cups of flour is to 2 eggs.
2. Three bestfriend put up their online clothing business and
needed to have Php 10,000 capital. They decided to have a
contribution of Php 2, 000, Php 3, 000 and Php 5, 000,
respectively.
3. A painter can finish painting the roof for 3 hours while two
painters can finish it for 1.5 hours.
In baking pandesal, 2 cups of flour is to 1 egg
and when increased, 4 cups of flour is to 2
eggs.
Direct Proportion

▪ The ratios of two quantities being compared is

constant
▪ When one quantity increases or decreases, so does
the other quantity
𝒙𝟏 : 𝒚𝟏 = 𝒙𝟐 : 𝒚𝟐
Example:
If you buy 2kg rice at 5 QAR, then you expect pay 10
QAR for 4 kg of rice
Direct Proportion Example
Four oranges weight as much as 7 lemons. At this
rate, how many lemons will weight as much as 36
oranges?

x – oranges
y – lemons
4:7 = 36:y
4y = 252
4
y = 63
A painter can finish painting the roof for 3
hours while two painters can finish it for 1.5
hours.
Inverse Proportion
▪ The product of two quantities being compared is
constant
▪ When one quantity increases (or decreases), the
other quantity increases (or decreases)
𝒙𝟏 . 𝒚𝟏 = 𝒙𝟐 . 𝒚𝟐
Example
If 10 men can build a kubo for 5 days, 5 men can build it for 10
days.
Inverse Proportion Example
A water delivery supplies water in Magagalitin Village.
Suppose it takes four pipes to fill a water tank for 50
minutes, how long will it take to fill the tank if five pipes are
used?
x – pipes
y – time
4:50 = 5:y
(4) (50) = (5) (y)
200 = 5y
5
y = 40
Three partners of an online business with a net
profit of Php 10, 000 decided to have a profit sharing
in the ratio of 1:2:3
Partitive Proportion

▪ In this proportion, the quantity is divided into two or

more parts based on the given fixed ratio of these
parts
▪ Equate the sum of the parts to the whole quantity
Partitive Proportion Example
Three best friends namely Ana, Lorna and Fe, decided to
invest an amount of Php 405, 000 in a swimsuit retailing
business in the ratio of 2:3:4, respectively. How much was
the investment made by each?

x – amount of each part

2x – Ana’s investment
3x – Lorna’s investment
4x – Fe’s Investment
Partitive Proportion Example
Three best friends namely Ana, Lorna and Fe, decided to invest an amount of
Php 405, 000 in a swimsuit retailing business in the ratio of 2:3:4, respectively.
How much was the investment made by each?

= 2x + 3x + 4x = 405, 000
= 9x = 405, 000
9
x = 45,000
Ana’s Inv = 2(45,000) = 90,000
Lorna’s Inv = 3(45,000) = 135,000
Fe’s Inv = 4(45,000) = 180,000
Try this
1. A business’s return of investment will
be allocated on three business
partners: Izza, Alma, and Aiza in the
ratio of 3:4:5, respectively. If the total
income is Php 1, 500,000, how much
will Alma receive?
Try this
1. In a week, Sally made Php 2,100 by
working 40 hours. How much will she
earn if she works for 36 hours?
See you next
week!
Thank you!
